COLLEGE PREVIEW 2014 NCAA DIVISION I WOMEN’S TOP 20 13 Lucy Ferguson W

Enemy Lines WHAT RIVAL COACHES SAY

“Lydia Miller’s return adds stability to the defense. It’s hard to say what to expect from the offense, but the defense will be solid and aggressive... Slow and methodical style – and smarts – keep them in games against teams with superior talent. Will be a solid team and No. 1 or No. 2 in the Ivy... Disciplined but defendable... The Ivy, as always, will come down to the conference tourney.”

Key Game The second of back-to-

back road games against its toughest Ivy rivals – on the heels of playing Northwestern – makes this Penn’s most perilous stretch. This will figure in the Ivy League title race.

hen Emily Leitner graduated as the unanimous first-team All-Ivy League goalie in 2012, it left a

gaping hole for Penn with no goalie with significant experience. In stepped Lucy Ferguson, a sophomore transfer who had started every game as a freshman at William & Mary and ranked fourth nationally in saves. She played all but six minutes for Penn in 2013, recorded 136 saves and allowed 8.84 goals per game. “She just killed it, basically,” Penn defender Meg Markham said. “She’s really good under pressure.” Ferguson’s save

with four seconds left allowed Penn to go to overtime against Princeton, where it clinched a

record-tying

seventh straight Ivy

League championship.

“She should take a lot of credit for us,” Quakers coach Karin Brower Corbett said. “There were games down to the wire and she came up with huge saves.” Said Ferguson: “I’ve never been a part of

a team that won a championship like that. That was part of the reason I came in. It’s obviously pressure, but good pressure.”

Top Returner D MEG MARKHAM (JR.)

Markham is Penn’s top takeaway defender. She showed tremendous growth in her sophomore season.

There were new expectations, a

new system, new teammates and new coaches, but the toughest adjustment for Ferguson was the return to a cooler climate when spring practices began in Philadelphia. “The full sweat suit was a transition,”

said Ferguson, who played scholastically for Montclair (N.J.) High. “I never wore sweatpants one time at William & Mary.” Ferguson cooled off opponents all

year. She was named MVP of the Ivy League tournament after making 20 saves in two games. She had 10 or more saves in five games overall. “Her reflexes and hand-eye coordination are incredible,” Corbett said. “She makes saves that there’s no way you’d think she comes up with. She inspires the team.” The backbone of its Ivy League dominance, the Penn defense returns Lydia Miller from injury, its best all- around player in Markham and returning starter Taylor Foussadier. “We have all the parts,” Ferguson

said of the defense. “The challenge is putting it together. We’ll be really, really good if we can do that.”

X-Factor D LYDIA MILLER (SR.)

Miller played one game last year while rehabbing a knee injury. Her return gives Penn three lockdown defenders with Markham and Taylor Foussadier. “Lydia’s back better than she was,” Corbett said.
