Picture Perfect Memory Schram Memorial Chapel
You have probably crossed the intersection of Patriot Boulevard and Chestnut and thought to yourself, “I wonder what goes on in that neat white chapel on the corner?” Schram Memorial Chapel is a facility of the Glenview Park District and since 2001 has served as a gathering place for a variety of private and community-based events. The chapel’s unique history can only be matched by the unique versatility it provides to modern-day Glenview residents looking for a neutral space to create a special event.
Built in 1945 by German prisoners of war, this historic non- denominational chapel served as a house of worship for thousands of servicemen and women passing through the Glenview Naval Air Station military base. Reminiscent of a classic 18th century New England Meeting House, the chapel was named after Captain Richard A. Schram, a renowned Navy flier. This structure has endured the changing landscape of Glenview with the proper care of the Glenview Park District. Restored and moved to its present location in 1999, this chapel can be used for gatherings of all sorts.
Schram’s simple elegance and beauty provides a fresh neutral canvas that can be customized and adorned for any occasion. Although weddings are still the leading events at the chapel, it can also be used for group gatherings such as Toastmasters, Eagle Scouts, and Bar and Bat Mitzvahs, concerts, and community gatherings.
The chapel is grounded with beautiful hardwood floors, stained glass windows, exposed beamed ceiling and its most versatile feature: the four-sided altar. The altar was built with different sides and can be rotated so any side can be used depending on the need. A gold plated side

can be used for formal occasions. The plain side can be used for more casual events and the ends can be used to hold flower arrangements, religious ornamentation, etc.
“I don’t think there is anything like Schram Chapel in this area,” says Denise Blinick, Manager of Rentals and Customer Service for the Glenview Park District. “This is a special place that offers event planners an intimate setting with unparalleled versatility.”
According to Blinick, some of the unique events hosted at Schram in recent years have included a couple who got married in the chapel 25 years ago and came back to renew their vows. In one recent marriage ceremony, the groom was hidden on one side of the rotating altar. As the bride walked down the aisle, the altar was rotated, revealing the groom ready to meet his bride as kind of a surprise ‘Ta Da” moment.
Schram Memorial Chapel has provided the perfect blank canvas for weddings and special events throughout its rich 67 year history: 198 weddings this past year alone! So, if you are looking for a versatile location to create unique masterpiece event, check out Schram Memorial Chapel.
