Fall 2012 President’s Message Dear Neighbor,

Celebrate the change of seasons with harvest-related festivals, folk music, pumpkin crops and a not-so-scary Halloween party for kids this fall at the Glenview Park District!

Wagner Farm welcomes fall with their annual Picnic Supper, Barnyard Dance & Ice Cream Social on Sept. 8. You can still find a bounty of seasonal fruits and vegetables at The Glenview Farmers Market through Oct. 13. Wagner Farm’s agricultural history is captured in a new exhibit that features a two-story wooden silo inside the Heritage Center museum.

This Oct. 7, step back in time at Grove Fest, The Grove’s folk festival featuring local history, live music & dancing, storytelling, hearty food and crafts.

Spooktacular, Park Center’s family- friendly Halloween celebration brings the fun indoors on Oct. 19 with crafts, games, entertainment and more.

Fall is a great time to introduce your child to figure skating or hockey with the Glenview Ice Center’s Beginners Only Lessons. At the price of just $15 for three lessons, you can find out if skating is something they enjoy before committing to a longer program.

You’ll find amazing fall colors at the 18-hole Glenview Park Golf Club and at the 9-hole Glenview National 9 Golf Club. Join the Glenview Park Golf Club staff for a free New Golfer Days clinic on Aug. 18 (adults) or Aug. 19 (youth) to learn the basic rules and shots of the game. Kids as young as 3 can begin developing essential skills needed for golf and a variety of other sports in the fall sessions of Glenview National 9’s cutting edge Youth Golf Development programs.

The Glenview Park District and the Glenview Public Library have teamed up for another Story Walk adventure, Sept. 8-Oct. 28. Read a book as you walk along the path in Little Bear Garden at Gallery Park.

The new Glenview National 9 Clubhouse for golf and paddle tennis, which includes

four paddle tennis courts, will provide active year-round recreational opportunities, as paddle tennis is a sport played mainly in the winter. The paddle tennis enterprise will be financially self-supporting, through memberships, court fees and lessons. It will include a pro shop, kitchen, bar, and indoor and outdoor viewing areas of the golf course and paddle tennis courts. The park district anticipates breaking ground this September with a spring 2013 opening date.

Throughout the month of August several things will be going on at Park Center. The fitness floor will be integrated with the new addition and new flooring will be installed throughout the existing space. Lakeview Rooms will be redecorated and Splash Landings will be closed for annual maintenance. Several areas of Park Center will get a deep cleaning.

The Park District will be adding three roofs for shade, new climbing components and rubberized materials to the existing playground structure at Beck Park. The 17-year-old wooden playground structure primarily used by older children and located at the south end of Flick Park will be completely replaced.

As part of the District’s Strategic Plan to update two fieldhouses per year, renovations to Manor Park Fieldhouse will be finished in time to use the location as a polling site for the November elections. Updates include new kitchen equipment, flooring, cabinets and paneling, energy-efficient lighting and insulation, and new bathroom fixtures.

The North Suburban Special Recreation Association offers a new season of programs for its participants this fall at Willow Park Fieldhouse, which was completely transformed into a fully accessible space for people with disabilities (see pg. 90).

Enjoy the fall season at the Glenview Park District.
