Physiotherapy and how it can benefit
injuries, particularly sports injuries By Graham McAnuff, Clinical Lead Physiotherapist, Elevate Physiotherapy Clinic
Sports or musculoskeletal physiotherapy is the specialised branch of physiotherapy which deals with injuries and issues related to sports people and musculoskeletal health. Common issues people may seek help for is pain, performance, previous injury and rehabilitation. Traditionally the core components have been on treatment and rehabilitation but in more recent years the major focus has turned to prevention.
Elevate Physiotherapy practice are pioneers of this new standard of care. Through the integration of exclusive leading technological advancements and industry leading clinicians they are rethinking, refining and ultimately redefining physiotherapeutic care.
The team at Elevate Physiotherapy Clinic have extensive experience dealing with full time professional and amateur athletes. The pathway begins by ruling out serious pathology or disease and trying to identify predisposing or maintaining factors that may be causing pain, injury or dysfunction. These factors may include biomechanics which is the science of explaining how and why the human body moves in the way that it does.
Here are some examples where physiotherapy is applied to either support athletes or solve issues
in sports performance or exercise.
The objective is to enhance performance or rehabilitate and reduce the injury risk in the sport and exercise tasks:
• The identification of the optimal technique for enhancing sports performance
• The analysis of body loading to determine the safest method for performing a particular sport or exercise task
• The assessment of muscular recruitment and loading
• The analysis of sport and exercise equipment e.g., shoes
The use of technology to identify damage or to provide support needed to accelerate healing and prevent recurrence, are common practice within elite level practices and leading clinicians. Elevate Physiotherapy Clinic are one of these practices, with exclusive licences to several technological advancements rarely seen outside of the professional sports clubs and academies. The Elevate team use 3D scanner and pressure analysis to identify patterns in athletes feet which may be causing pain or altered function in the foot, achilles, shin, knee, hip and back. They can then support the foot and identify movements patterns in the body which may be altering
dysfunction or performance.

Pilates can help with injuries,
particularly from sport By Kate Cunningham, Polestar Pilates Studio Instructor
Pilates is a movement method which improves mobility, strength and confidence in your movement, for life. Pilates practice helps to condition the whole body by developing even muscle tone without bulk, and improve flexibility, stability, agility and proprioception (your sense of where your body is in space).
Pilates can be performed on a floor mat or on specially designed apparatus. The Pilates Method, developed by Joseph Pilates during the First World War, was initially used to rehabilitate injured war veterans through the performance of specific exercises done with great focus on control, breathe and alignment. Originally, springs of different tensions were attached to veterans’ hospital beds to provide the necessary assistance/resistance restore muscle function and efficient movement. This concept evolved into the high spec. Pilates equipment used today whereby stability and mobility can be challenged or assisted depending on the individual’s needs. The system was originally called ‘Contrology’ with the goal of developing a strong mind to gain total control over the physical body so that it was "fully capable of naturally, easily and satisfactorily performing
our many and varied daily tasks with spontaneous zest and pleasure", according to Joseph Pilates
Today Pilates, both the classical method and a contemporary evolution of it, is often used by dancers and athletes to improve their level of performance as well as members of the public who wish to enhance their experience of functional movement.
Pilates benefits sports injuries by addressing faulty movement patterns and malalignments. It restores pain free movement by providing the necessary assistance for joints to move throughthrough a beneficial range of motion without strain. Pilates exercises can be preciselyel modified for the individual by altering spring tension, load, lever length and the mover’s orientation to gravity. So if y uyo can’t perform a controlled movement, the exercise can be modified to assist you until you achieve a level of controltrol to perform the exercise with less assistance and so you progress. Equally, if you are an elite athlete looking to improve your dynamic
