“Today, if we extended the arm across from the existing breakwater towards Mont Orgueil Castle”
Aspiring Senator looks to the future of Island
sport and much more
My passion for sport is extremely strong and comes from years of involvement both competing and coaching.

Moving forward we do need to understand the differing needs of all groups within the community but it will be important to have a strong focus on encouraging children and young people to participate in sport both within schools and the vast range of sports that are on offer outside of school hours.
I have personally seen how sport can change lives when coaching young footballers by watching them enjoy the game, learn new skills, make friends, grow and finally mature into rounded confident adults. I have also seen close at hand how the fun, disappointment, frustration and pure joy of being involved as a volunteer at sports clubs enhances peoples' lives and all those they support. We should never underestimate the value of the time and effort that volunteers give not only to sport but the wider community.

where money is invested rather than to make each and every funding decision about an individual sporting activity. The States, and in particular the Minister responsible for Sport at any given time, have an important leadership role to play in bringing schools, sports clubs and associations, governing bodies, health and increasingly the private sector together to build relationships to improve how sport is delivered and to remove hurdles to wider participation. Sport must be inclusive to all those wanting to make sport part of their lives.
To inform Jersey’s next Government on how to implement a truly joined up approach to active and healthy living, I intend to host a seminar in early 2018 on ways in which the States could improve its provision of physical activity to islanders and how each States department can play their part in making Jersey more active. We must take the opportunity to integrate physical activity into a more structured public health policy as part of the wider shift from a system that simply treats ill health to one that provides an active lifestyle and wellbeing for all islanders. Through all ages in Jersey, physical inactivity is an issue that needs to be tackled head on and quickly if we are to reduce our reliance on an already stretched health service. That includes keeping people fit in the workplace and
