Some questions for Steve

Question: What do you do to unwind at the end of a long day? Answer:

in St.Brelades Bay, a run up the Railway Walk or a more gentle walk around the parish. At home I love watching films and documentaries and if I can keep my eyes open, reading.

Question: What do you like the most about being a Constable? Answer: The most enjoyable part of being a Constable is day to day contact with parishioners on all sorts of issues. Some who have moved to Jersey tell me that they never had the same access to their politicians on the homeland, so I make an effort to be accessible.

Question: What do you dislike most about being a Constable? Answer: Nothing. Whether you like something or not it is part of being Constable and still requires your attention.

Question: How did you become a Constable? Answer: I originally stood for election as Constable in 2005 and was unsuccessful, and then offered the chance to join the St.Brelade Honorary Police where I learnt the value of the Honorary system. I stood again as Connetable in late 2011 and was fortunate to win the election.

Question: What advice would you give someone, either just starting their career or midway through their career, who wants to be a Constable?

Answer: Think carefully and weigh up what consequences it may have on your family. It might mean a reduction in income that could impact on quality of life especially if you have young children. States Members pay is not pensionable either so you will need to consider retirement. Also I would advise talking to a Constable to fully understand the breadth of the role as your decisions will impact on peoples' lives.

unfit, a driver is assessed by an independent doctor but he might also need a driving assessment to assist the Connetable to make his decision. Support can be offered if the licence has to be revoked, but safety has to be the paramount concern.

I rarely leave the office before 6:00 p.m. as it gives me the chance to consider more difficult decisions in a quieter environment when the public office is closed. Days are often long but they are always interesting. Having the opportunity to meet parishioners face to face on a very regular basis is part of the role that I most enjoy although it is impossible to please everyone!

On average I will have two evening meetings a week but if not I head home to catch up with my wife Ann and take our two staffies, Buster and Ruby for a good walk. Being able to talk to someone who not only understands, but has a real interest in what I do, is important so I look at being Connetable as a team effort and appreciate the support Ann gives me. We have dinner together most nights, watch some TV or I might read a book but generally I am in bed by 10.30 p.m.
