Healthhaus - taking the ‘gym out of gym’


What does a health system that’s stretched to capacity, the obesity crisis, mental health issues and an ageing population all have in common?

This was the topic of conversation at the 2017 UK active National Summit at which Baroness Tanni Grey Thompson gave a passionate speech, declaring that: “activity is the ‘golden thread’ that holds society together.”


On a personal level, leading an active lifestyle is good for your physical health - helping us keep our weight down, preventing high blood pressure and helping us stave off illnesses such as heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Activity also has a real impact on our mental wellbeing; improving our brain function and helping us feel less anxious. Less physical and mental illness also means less pressure on the health system. confidence and feeling of self worth and consequently our interactions with others improves.


All too often people turn to activity, due to necessity, for example, at times of ill health. Our aim at Healthhaus is to spread the message that exercise should be used for prevention as well and encourage our members to lead a more active lifestyle. The obvious place to start is by educating our children, but it’s never too late to incorporate activity into our daily life. With an average age of 45 and members in their 80s, Healthhaus members prove just that. Regular activity helps us retain mobility, strength, brain function and ultimately our independence and quality of life, but for many the thought of stepping foot into a gym is at best daunting and for some totally off their radar.
