LIFE OF A DAY IN THE CATHY DAVISON DETECTIVE SERGEANT POLICE OFFICER, STATES OF JERSEY

I started my working career in the military, I was there for a number of years and when I came home it seemed the natural thing to do to join the Police. After 23 years in the job, I’ve tried my hand at most things to do with policing. I’ve worked on search teams and surveillance and worked as a SOLO (Sexual Offence Liaison Officer) in the past and in addition to my normal roles, I’m also currently a Police Negotiator, a FLO (Family Liaison Officer), a manager of HOLMES (Home Office Large Major Enquiry System) and I also work on our Welfare committee as a Welfare officer when required.

A typical day for me starts with a visit to MASH the Multi- Agency Safeguarding Hub where I am notified of any incidents that are of interest to our Public Protection Unit (PPU). My job is to see if any of these are child related and I also review all of the Child Protection Notifications (CPN) that have come in. These are usually put in place when there is police interaction with a child that we have concerns for. I do these checks every morning at MASH and if needed, share any information with other partner agencies that we work with.

If we come across a child that has had more than 3 CPNs in 30 days then I’ll request a multi-agency response to ensure that all the agencies are fully aware of the concerns raised and formulate a response to support and deal with these concerns.

I also review and discuss with the MASH Decision Maker any domestic reports where a child is involved, which may require making a MASH referral.

Part of my day will also include reviewing the Missing Person status of young people as I also coordinate the Multi- Agency Sexual Exploitation (MASE) meetings with the Team Leader of the Social Work team that are looking after that particular young person. I will co-chair the MASE meetings with Social Services when they take place to ensure positive and pro-active actions and interventions are taken to protect a child from sexual exploitation. Child safeguarding is a high priority and an area of policing for which I have a great passion.
