Some questions for Jonny
Question: What do you do to unwind at the end of a long day? Answer: As I spend most of my day in the office I like to keep fit and be active in the evenings. So it’s either football at Jersey Wanderers or boxing fitness at the The Rock. Boxing is a new hobby that I enjoy since competing in the 2017 White Collar event. It was an amazing experience and something I won’t forget.
Question: What do you like the most about being a Web Developer?
Answer: I love the the variety and diversity of the job, no two projects are the same. It’s a great feeling when you launch a new site and very satisfying to hear positive client feedback.
Question: What do you dislike most about being a Web Developer?
Answer: When you spend hours problem solving only to find out there was a simple solution starring you in the face along. Fellow developers will sympathise with me on this one.
Question: How did you become a Web Developer? Answer: I studied Interactive Media Production at Bournemouth University and when I graduated I was fortunate enough to get a position as a web developer at another local agency in Jersey. My degree was a good foundation but I feel I developed the majority of my skills working full time.
Question: What advice would you give someone, either just starting their career or midway through their career, who wants to be a Web Developer?
By this point I’m feeling hungry so usually start thinking about lunch. It’s normally an early lunch as I struggle to find the time for breakfast. I’ll grab something quick to bring back to the office so I very rarely get to enjoy a full lunch hour. I highly recommend the Mexican chicken wraps toasted from The Taste unless it’s a Friday and I treat myself to a steak sandwich in The Royal Yacht.
Once lunch is done I get my head back down and crack on with work. I shuffle my schedule around depending on what has cropped up throughout the day. By late afternoon I usually know if I will be leaving on time or whether a few extra hours are required. 9-5 doesn't really apply when running your own business but I don't mind as I know I’ll get out of it whatever I put in. We strive as a team to deliver on time and meet deadlines, this is important for our clients and their businesses.
Before logging off I’ll check my diary and review my schedule for the following day. I like to organise my workload day to day so I know my priorities and keep projects moving forward, it's important to be one step ahead.
When the day is done its lights off and I head home, usually it's a quick snack, a change of clothes then I head to footy!

Answer: I would recommend going online, there are so many useful resources available such as TreeHouse or Code Academy which are really informative and are suitable for all skill levels. Digital Jersey is also a great local resource hub for people with an interest in the digital industry. Web agencies are often drawn to people who have developed their own skills through personal interest and research. This is what we look for in potential new recruits at iPOP. .
