Sport is not just about being fit BY MATTHEW SMITH

Director of Sport, Victoria College.

For many people, school PE is their first taste of sport and physical activity in a structured environment. Over the course of a young person’s school life, they will have the opportunity to experience a wide range of different sporting activities. We hope that by the time they have finished with us at Victoria College, all pupils will have had exposure to at least one activity they have enjoyed enough to ensure they continue to participate, and as such remain active and healthy, into adulthood so that they can all enjoy the benefits of lifelong participation in sport.

Our sporting programme is rich in its diversity with all pupils getting 2 hours of compulsory PE a week throughout their time at the College. However it is the extra-curricular programme of the school which we are rightly proud of, providing pupils with out of school sporting experiences and opportunities which develop them as young people. Whether it be at our nightlbe at our nightly clubs and practices, clubs and practices,

playing in the school team or representing their House in inter- school matches, we hope that there will be something for everyone regardless of their ability level or level of experience.

e f transferable skills for later life and good

Sport is an important part of the life of a Victoria College pupil, not only because of the benefits of being physically active, but because of the problem solving, team-work and leadership skills that each and every activity teaches the boys. There are so many life skills to be learnt on the sports fields, not least in the face of adversity and how to show resilience in the face of defeat. Good sportsmanship and the ability to follow expected etiquettes are always transferable skills for later life and good

y b stone into that sport.

Many of our boys go on to play sport at a very high level, including representing the Island and national teams. We take pride in the fact that in a number of cases we have been able to provide that first stepping stone into that sport.
