Jersey is used to an impressive range of sporting infrastructure. In 2015 £4.5m was invested in sports facilities, including a new hockey pitch at Les Quennevais, a new athletics track at FB Fields, and new 3G pitches at Springfield Stadium and Haute Vallee School.

Sport features positively in ‘Future Jersey’, which measures the percentage of adults rating the range of sporting activities and events in Jersey as ‘good’ or ‘very good’. The challenge will be to shift perceptions of sporting events in Jersey from ‘good’ to ‘very good’. Progress will benefit health and life satisfaction indicators and support Jersey’s attraction as a place to live.

In 2013 a survey in sport concluded that 69% of islanders wanted sports facilities to remain run by the States. This suggests that the public are content with current service provision.

Active card membership regularly surveys it members. The 2017 survey said that more than 97% of respondents said they would ‘strongly agree or agree’ to recommending Active to a friend or colleague. This survey received a 15% response rate. I’d like to think that this is a strong indicator that the service we provide is viewed by our customers as providing value for money.

Any major changes would involve extensive consultation to evaluate the impact on all concerned.

How would (privatisation?) impact on the lower paid and senior citizens? At the moment there are affordable pricing structures for groups and individuals. State schools get free use of sports

centres, playing fields and pitches. Fee paying schools get a 50% discount. Clubs and associations also get a discount on headline prices for all non-commercial activities for under 18’s.

Pensioners are also eligible for discounted Active Card memberships.

It is difficult to accurately anticipate how a private company would manage its pricing structure.
