Comment March 2017
We’ve been debating in the office about the practicalities of using the push notification abilities of the new G3Newswire App. On the one hand, it’s great to be able to notify our 8,500+ users of the big news events taking place in our industry, immedately as they happen. On the other hand, as the install base ranges from the US to Australia, waking our readers from sleep, interupting their meetings, alerting them at home with their families - well, having the functionality and then using it responsibly is something we’re hotly debating internally.
I recently switched off my notifications from the BBC News App after receiving the earth-shattering news of the Oscars Awards mix-up between Moonlight and La La Land. While certainly interesting, it really wasn’t 5am interesting, but then that’s perhaps just awards-fatigue adversly affecting me after the ICE show.
Our review this issue spans 46-pages and whether you managed to visit the show this year or couldn’t make it to London, you’ll find stories from the leading gaming suppliers about their passions, future plans and, of course, ‘award-winning’ products. Everyone has won an award. It’s now such an over-used term that it’s background noise at best and much like my correspondence law degree from Lichtenstein University, the lineage of some of these awards is more than a little suspect.
G3 THIS MONTH LAUNCHES ITS BRAND NEW G3NEWSWIRE APP, DOWNLOADABLE FROM THE APP STORE AND VIA GOOGLE PLAY
The number of companies in the gaming industry being contacted by awards-giving agencies appears to be rocketing. World News Media, Softech Intl and CIO Review, to name just a few, offer companies the ability to be the top-rated in their industry segment, with entry into a shortlist for a not insubstantial sum, which guarantees an award. While there are legitimate, well organised and consicentiously run awards in the gaming industry, their value is being tarnished by the rest.
Right now, when someone tells me they’ve won an industry award, I’m automatically reaching to “switch off my notifications,” which is not the desired response. Awards should be recognition of the genuine innovation, dedication and amazing technological ability and expertise that we saw brimming over on the stands at ICE 2017 - what was probably the best gaming exhibition G3 has ever attended. Our review reflects that, I just wish more of the awards would too.
