CASH HANDLING Crown Technologies
will become the norm, rather than the exception.”
GENERATION GAP Modern payment solutions rely on the latest
technology to offer cashless payment from smartphones through to NPC cards and single wallet solutions. One of the issues directly affecting the change to smart payment options is the adoption by different generations of players to this new technology. While older generations have proven they’re comfortable paying online for goods and services, the anonymity of cash for gaming transactions continues to appeal to this generation of players, with the UK land-based market still recording up to 80 per cent play via cash. And while younger generations have shown their willingness (or perhaps lack of worry) as regards their own data privacy and anonymity, we’re still in the position in which the spending power of these Millennials falls far short of the Generation X-ers and Baby-Boomers.
“Te shift to new payment methods really depends on the country and the history of using money,” states Mr. Busse. “Speaking to operators, we take care to explain what the advantages are to use cashless solutions, such as TITO. We also explain what data we are able to collect and operators need to be transparent with their players about how they will record and use that information upfront. We are still in the middle of a transition to new payment systems, but I believe that once we have explained all the advantages, to both operator and player, then cashless
One of the major reasons for switching to cashless is the potential to increase revenues when offering different payment solutions. While a change terminal is not an AWP or slot, in that it does not generate income directly from the player, Crown’s experience working with Spielbank Kassel in Germany, an operator that has installed a complete network of payment terminals, is that they reduced the direct payouts to the players by as much as 40 per cent and replaced this payout process by using redemption terminals, which at the end has brought about huge efficiencies for the operator. “Time savings mean that casinos can devote more energy to servicing customers and offering promotions, as opposed to processing transactions,” explains Mr. Busse. “Players are spending less time processing cash and more time enjoying the services and amenities on offer in the venue.”
CAREFREE AND SINGLE Te single wallet is a much talked about payment
solution that ties together online, mobile and land- based play, but which Mr. Busse believes will only become part of the mainstream payments offer in the medium term future. “Our view is that payment solutions will migrate towards the single wallet as it makes payments much easier for the player and much more secure,” claims Mr. Busse. “Having a single account between casino, mobile or online, will be the solution of choice in the future, but it will predominantly appeal to a younger generation, one familiar with modern payment systems. Our duty is to work together with the operator to develop easy, secure systems, offering cash and ticketing solutions now, and support for new technologies in the future.
“We assume that cash will never actually die out, but will continue this co-existence with cashless systems far into the future,” continues Mr. Busse. “At Crown, we believe that operators must continue to offer multiple channels to pay, as it’s in no one’s interest to turn away a paying customer. If a player wants to pay in cash - let them - but equally, operators need to accommodate customers wanting to pay with tickets or their smartphone. Te key is to not exclude anyone.”
EUROMAT, the European Gaming and Amusement Federation, held its 2nd Annual Gaming Summit at the Hotel Majestic in the historic centre of Barcelona. The EUROMAT Gaming Summit is the only event dedicated to the street gaming market in Europe. It’s a chance for industry peers to reflect, learn and prepare for changes in the market place or to regulation. 200 delegates gathered to hear about the latest commercial trends, challenges and opportunities from industry leaders, including Harrie Temmink, the European Commission’s lead policy official for gaming.
