Revenues Up for Santa Casa de Misericordia EMEA


Gross revenues from casinos, bingo halls and games operated by state-run charity Santa Casa de Misericordia de Lisboa increased in the first quarter of 2016


Gaming revenues rise 32 per cent compares to last year for the Portuguese state-run charity, Santa Casa de Misericordia de Lisboa


SPAIN – Spanish operator CIRSA has reported that it increased operating profit by 8.5 per cent in the first quarter of this year compared to the same period in 2015 with operating profit reaching €98.5m. During the first quarter the company invoiced a total of €389m - 1.5 per cent more than it did in 2015.


The company reported that it had achieved “significant growth" in Latin America, especially in Argentina and Colombia, where it highlighted the opening of a new casino The Casino Hollywood in Medellín. Strong performances in Colombia and Argentina had partially mitigated the impact of the devaluation of the Argentine peso (down 69.2 per cent) and the Colombian peso (down 27.3 per cent). Cirsa also reported continued improved performance in Spain while recent acquisitions in Costa Rica and Morocco had also contributed positively to the company’s growth.


In Spain the operation of its slot division continued its upward trend of revenue growth, which has been helped by regulatory changes in some regions and the improved performance of its new multi game products the company said. It was also seeing the benefits of the reforms of its slot parlours as it implements the Toka brand concept in its slot division and highlighted the addition of four new slot parlours. Meanwhile, its bingos division also continued to grow while the company also reported an increase in sports betting via its Sportium sports betting shops especially in the regions of Catalonia and Extremadura.


In 2015 Cirsa reported operating income in 2015 of €1,853m, up 16.5 per cent, with profits of €380m, 15.8 per cent more than the previous year. 2015 brought the number of consecutive quarters of growth to 38 for the company, which now runs 133 casinos with more than 40,000 slots, 71 bingo halls and 162 slot halls with 3,125 VLTs.

Gross revenues from casinos, bingo halls and games operated by state-run charity Santa Casa de Misericordia de Lisboa increased in the first quarter of 2016 by 32 per cent compared to the same period last year. In total, the Portuguese spent €762.5m - €183m more than in the first three months of 2015. Gross sales also rose by 36 percent and stood at €678.8m. Te strong performance was influenced by a new sports fixed-odds sports betting product Placard, which was launched in September 2015 and which accounted for 13 per cent of revenue in the first quarter of this year. In January, sales for games run by the charity increased by as much as 44 per cent compared with the same month in 2015 standing at €243m. Around 12 per cent of this figure was achieved with the new sports betting game. Te lottery predicts that the game will generate yearly sales of around €250m.


Te lottery games operated by the state which include the EuroMillions lottery as well as instants accounted for around 89 per cent of sales. Meanwhile bingo and and casinos made up a small part of gross income. Tis year with the first licences for online gaming going live the


organisation predicts that gaming revenue will increase significantly. Santa Casa da Misericordia de Lisboa has already announced its intention to apply for a license for the provision of online gambling in Portugal.


Meanwhile land based casinos have gone through six consecutive years of losses but this year could report positive results according to reports in local media. Between January and March revenue rose 5 per cent compared to the same period last year, reaching €71m.


Back in 2012 it was revealed that a government committee was looking into legalising online gambling in order to raise cash for state pension funds and to aid debt-ridden soccer clubs. Tis was after a Portuguese court ruled that the sponsorship of sports by online gambling companies was illegal. Under previous rules only the state-run charity Santa Casa de Misericordia de Lisboa could offer sports betting and lotteries. Betclic was the first company to be issued a licence after new laws were passed last year which gave the green light to online gaming companies.

Czech Republic steps closer to legalisation for foreign online casinos

Te Czech Republic has become much closer to licensing international online casino operators. Te relevant bill has successfully overcome another procedural hurdle.


Te Senate of the Czech Republic has approved a new gambling law for the country. Te decision was adopted with a large majority of votes: 42 senators were in favor, while 23 abstained. No one voted against the bill. President Milos Zeman will have 30 days to consider and sign the bill into law. In case of a positive decision of


Te main objective of the new law is to remove the old ban on foreign online operators. Nevertheless, even if online casino operators are based in the EU and EEA they will face a very unpleasant surprise in the form of a new tax plan.


Under the new bill, lotteries and sports betting will be taxed 23 percent of gross income. Te tax rate for casinos will be even higher at 35 percent. In contrast, the average tax on gambling activities in Europe is 19 percent. Officials have taken preventive measures to minimise possible risks for people with addiction tendencies. In particular, there is a plan to establish a national database of "excluded" players to block their access to online casinos. Tose in bankruptcy and people receiving financial assistance from the Czech Republic will be entered into this database, as well.
