Chilean casino operator, Enjoy, is working with Bank of America to find a potential new partner for its Conrad casino deal

Chile - Operations

Chilean casino operator Enjoy has instructed the Bank of America’s corporate and investment banking division Merrill Lynch with the task of finding a partner to participate in its plan to keep 100 per cent of the casino Conrad in Punta del Este in Uruguay, acquiring the 55 per cent it currently has in Caesars Entertainment. Ignacio de la Cuadra, Chief Financial Officer of Enjoy said that the company had chosen the bank because they

“have a fantastic reach both in the US in Europe and Latin America. They have good networks to reach what we are looking for and also extensive experience in doing this,” he said.

As previously reported Enjoy is looking for a strategic partner to help exercise the option to take 100 per cent ownership of the Conrad in Punta del Este, which will require about US$200.

However, the executive said that the Enjoy has given the bank a broad mandate, with the only specification being that the partner will be able to contribute in an area where they say they have limited experience: real estate.

As previously reported, the company is possibly looking for a partner active in the non gaming sec- tor. In May President of Enjoy Antonio Martinez explained that the trend in the casino industry

globally is that 60 percent of business revenues come from non gaming areas, which is not the case for Enjoy – a situation which the company is trying to reverse.

Mr. De la Cuadra also talked about the recent agreement reached with the Decameron hotel chain which was reached last month. Joint opera- tions will come into operation in the first half of 2016 and the agreement will provide Enjoy with the possibility of entering two new markets: Colombia and Peru, where it will install three gambling centres. The deal will, according to Mr. De la Cuadra, allow Enjoy “to enter countries where we are not present, more quickly, with a super light business model without large invest- ments,” he said.

Regarding the Conrad Mr. de la Cuadra said that

“the visibility the company has on an international stage” will give them the opportunity to expand worldwide adding that the company is looking to work with some of the largest operators in the world and has not counted out a Lain American partner. The choice of this partner could be revealed by the end of the year he said.

Calls for change to Mexico online gambling laws grow

MEXICO President of the Mexican Gaming Association (AIEJA) Miguel Angel Ochoa has urged lawmakers to pass new laws which would reg- ulate the online gaming sector in Mexico. Talking at the end of the UNI Gaming Global Meeting, which took place in June in Tijuana, Mexico he said it was urgent that steps be taken to address the issue as $3bn pesos was being gambled per year online via offshore betting sites.

Organisations from five conti- nents and 17 countries took part in the two day conference. AIEJA represents around 35 per cent of the casinos in Mexico.

Emphasising the growth in the regulated land based industry Mr. Ochoa said there is rising concern regarding the headway online gambling companies are making into the market. It was now up to the Senate to address the issue,

he said, when it considers new gaming legislation later this year.

“What is needed now is that

safeguards are put in place for the issuing of online gaming licences. . .” says Mr. Ochoa.

He said that the new law could be approved by the Senate between September and December and could come into force in 2016. According to Mr. Ochoa, from that point onwards there would be a more modern framework “which will provide certainty and securi- ty for customers and Mexican investors and provide higher taxes to the Mexican govern- ment.”

Mr. Ochoa went onto say that the unfair competition from offshore operators has impacted licensed operations in Mexico. He also urged players to gamble via local- ly licences online operators.

Under current rules gaming com- panies which are already physi- cally established in Mexico are permitted to apply for an online license, but a large number of off- shore operators are offering their services to locals. Legislation which seeks to regulate the gam- ing industry has yet to be passed by the Mexican Senate.

The House of Representatives passed Mexico’s new Federal Betting and Raffles Law in December last year but the bill is now currently stalled. It is hoped that Senators could amend some parts of the law so that it more fully encompasses the online gaming sector before it is finally approved later this year.
