Portugal’s state-run charity, Santa Casa de Misericordia de Lisboa (SCML), is to enter the online market in Portugal and has created a consortium specifically to explore online gaming called the Social Betting Society.
Te new consortium is made up of SCML, as well as a number of other charities. Deputy Supplier and Executive Director of SCML, Edmundo Martinho, stated that the charity will apply for an online licence from the gaming authority.
Te charity will offer sports betting, pari-mutuel betting and other games of chance and could later expand its offer to include a wide variety of online games. He also said said that the offer of online gaming would in no way negatively affect its core business.
“Te games that are to be made available will have a different nature and models, so that the belief is that there will be no negative impact on the revenues made by the other games operated by Santa Casa through its Gaming Department.” He commented that Gross revenues from

IGT has signed a contract to provide Video Lottery Terminals (VLTs), a VLT Central System, site controllers, games, and operational services to AB Svenska Spel in Sweden as part of a competitive procurement process. IGT, as legacy GTECH, has been providing video lottery products and support services to Svenska Spel, operator of the Swedish national lottery and a World Lottery Association member, since 1996.
“Troughout the last two decades, we’ve successfully supported and enhanced Svenska Spel’s approach to protecting players while creating advanced solutions to meet their business objectives,” said Walter Bugno, CEO, IGT International. “Tis
casinos, bingo halls and games operated by SCML increased in the first quarter of 2016 by 32 per cent compared to the same period the previous year. In total, the Portuguese spent €762.5m – €183m more than in the first three months of 2015.
Last January sales for games run by the charity increased by as much as 44 per cent compared with the same month in 2015 standing at €243m. Te strong performance was influenced by a new fixed-odds sports betting product Placard, which was launched in September 2015 and which accounted for 13 per cent of revenue in the first quarter of this year. Around 12 per cent of this figure was achieved with the new sports betting game. Te lottery predicts that the game will generate yearly sales of around €250m.
In 2012 it was revealed that a government committee was looking into legalising online gambling in order to raise cash for state pension funds and to aid debt-ridden soccer clubs. Under previous rules only SCML could offer sports betting and lotteries.

Russian operator Domain LLC has opened the first casino in the Krasnaya Polyana, Sochi, gambling zone in Russia’s Krasnodar Territory. Known as the Sochi Casino and Resort, the five-star complex has opened at the Gorki Gorod mountain resort with 569 slots and 70 tables costing an investment of RUB4bn (US$66.3m). Domain LLC said: “Sochi Casino and Resort is a project with a unique concept for Russia in the spirit of the best casinos of Las Vegas. Te casino opened on January 5.’ Te entertainment complex includes a casino, two restaurants, cabaret theatre, bar and other venues. Its target is to attract 43,000 guests every month with projected turnover for the year pitched at R4.6bn with ‘significant growth’ tipped within two years. Te licence for the casino was issued by the Krasnodar Krai administration. It is located in the former press office used at the Winter Olympics.
