systems or fume extraction devices. These mobile systems deal with problems where they are generated. Today’s fume extraction devices are portable and can be easily moved when production lines need to be changed, unlike the roof sets used for venting outside. They also remove many of the associated dan- gers and difficulties. Neighbors, sustainability and
green council groups prefer LEV solutions as they prevent external ventilation. Outside weather condi- tions have no effect on LEV systems and therefore no effect on processes such as reflow ovens or wave solder- ing units. LEV systems or fume extractors often reassure workers

they should be discussed and con- firmed with the supplier whenever possible. “I feel that the most effective way to provide support is through face-to-face meetings with the OEM’s design group. Of course, in some instances Skype might be as effective
that return air quality is good as many have monitoring systems included in their displays.
Any operation where a material is cut, marked, heated, burned, or
physically altered in any way has the potential to produce harmful materials, which then circulate in the air.
Good systems can even produce
better air quality than the rooms in which they are located. Today’s sys-
tems also generally employ the use of both speed and volume control. This allows for them to be set at the speed that they need to run and increase in speed as their filters become blocked. This uses less power than fan sets that run at a fixed speed, prevents incon- sistency of air flow to processes, and allows for longer more predictable periods between maintenance. These newer generations of
LEV systems generally allow for the use of a pre-filter and HEPA filtra- tion, combined with a chemical filter that will remove particulates and VOCs or gases. As the capture recommended for use of an LEV system is general-
ly to be employed at the source of fumes and dust, they provide a solu- tion for a polluted and unhealthy work place. Fume extraction can be beneficial as a means of safety and employee satisfaction, which leads to decreased sick time taken by employ- ees. Fume extraction can also be directly linked to reduced mainte- nance in production lines, increased uptime of equipment and increased production. Contact: Purex, Inc.,

as meeting in person,” says Stricker. INTEK also provides its OEM cus- tomers with an approval drawing for each new element design.
Meaningful Value Added “Expect thoroughness from your
supplier and good response time,” Stricker advises. When his company completes a design they offer to stock the element so customers won’t have delivery problems. This service is per- formed in several different stages — raw materials, work in progress, and finished goods are all kept on hand. This type of service enables OEM cus- tomers to meet their delivery require- ments in time when they are in short supply.
“These days virtually all prod-
ucts and processes have some propri- etary aspects,” says Stricker. “That is why we share design concepts, not proprietary information. This is an important distinction that allows us to help our OEM customers achieve their goals in a unique manner, and yet protect their product and process information at the same time.” Contact: INTEK Corporation,
