business: getting the most out of trade shows let the show begin!

“Take a note book to record vital information, most companies will give you relevant information but have a note book so as you can make your own notes about things discussed or specific questions you asked – it will help you remember everything later on when you review your day,” recommends Marie-Louise.

Alongside your notebook, remember to take your business cards and swap these with your companies of interest. That way, you both have each other’s details in a neat, concise form and will be able to get in contact easily for a post-event follow up.

Other practical elements to bear in mind on the day include making sure you’re comfortably dressed with appropriate footwear! Those four inch heels may look fabulously fashionable but with lots of ground to cover, your feet may think otherwise after a few hours of pounding the exhibition space’s notoriously hard floors. Also, consider taking a mixture of payment methods with you – cards and cash are best.

show offers

A great incentive to attend trade shows are the exclusive discounts and deals offered by nearly all of the show’s exhibitors, which can save you £1,000s!

“Watch out for show offers, there is always a deal to be done,” says Finishing Touches’ Jade Kingshott. “Pick up as much information as possible, as you never know when your business will require its next equipment investment.”

“A lot of companies will have special offers available at the exhibition only, make sure you take advantage of the ones that are of interest to you,” adds Marie-Louise. “If you are particularly looking to take on a new brand, piece of equipment or perhaps looking to enrol on a training course, the show could be the time to do it.”

Once you have registered for your tickets, the regular e-newsletters and show promotional material will keep you informed of exclusive exhibitor offers and competitions you can enjoy. Plus, following the event’s social media pages on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram will prove worthwhile. Here, the very latest happenings are posted daily to make sure you’re kept in the know.

Take advantage of any educational seminars, demos, workshops and networking events that take place during the course of the event.

get inspired

Even though a large portion of your time will be spent visiting the stands, trade exhibitions offer visitors a number of exciting and motivational experiences. A day out at the show can lead to inspiration and advice for your business, providing an ideal opportunity to network with like-minded therapists, technicians and other professionals, as well as the setting to discover new training opportunities and further professional development options. Make sure you take advantage of any demos, workshops and networking events that take place during the course of the event.

Likewise educational seminars are regular fixtures at beauty shows, aimed at assisting your therapy career and boosting your business. Presented by leading experts and covering a wide variety of beauty, aesthetic, hair, make-up and business topics, seminars are often free to attend and there’s no need to book a place in advance – just take a seat and enjoy!

“Have a good look at the list of seminars – is anyone discussing something that could be really helpful to you? Seminars are a great way of getting important (and neutral) industry advice to help you with your business and personal development,” comments Marie-Louise.

“Gaining new business skills is always essential to success and the varied educational seminar programmes at trade

shows are well worth considering,” adds Abbas. “These offer the ideal opportunity to learn about what is happening in the industry, sample new treatments and to glean advice from industry leaders.”

post-show

The show may be over for another year, but once you return home, remember to set aside time to have a thorough read of the promotional material you have gathered and test out samples you have collected. Following this, you can then get in touch with any companies which sparked your interest.

“After the show, organise the information you have collated and have a good read through it,” says Marie-Louise. “Make a short list and any notes, contact the companies if necessary to clarify any information, and put an action plan in place.”
