In the beginning, skin care was exclusive to the hands. By the early 1900s technology had made its way into the world of esthetics with the use of high frequency. By the 70s, galvanic and microcurrent hit the market and by the 80s, microdermabrasion – changing the world of skin care forever.
Today, forward thinking manufacturers have made remarkable advances in the historical technologies developed for skin care professionals around the world, and have created new amazing technology to add to our repertoire including LED, ultrasound, ultrasonic and oxygen infusion. The result is an industry transformed; technology accelerated skin care.
Although we have over a century of history of technology being used in skin care, it has not been until the last decade that
technology has lead skin care. This slow transition was likely due in part because history as always defined skin care as being performed exclusively with the hands. Finding a way to integrate modern technological advances with skin care took some time to ensure that we as an industry could gain the benefits, while at the same time, not lose our esthetic compass; our hands.
organic technology
Is there such a thing as organic technology? The easiest way to categorise technology is by invasive or non-invasive. Technically by definition, invasive suggests “the introduction of an instrument into the body”. In skin care we can think of the two categories in this way:
• Invasive:Technology and products that damage and create trauma to the human body.
• Non-Invasive:Technology and products that work in harmony with the human body and create no damage.
Technologies such as Laser or Radio Frequency, for example, create a controlled level of thermal damage to the human body. The body’s reaction to this damage is trauma, inflammation, discoloration, regeneration, and finally – healing, all with the hopes of ending up with a better product than you began with.
Technology such as microcurrent, LED and oxygen infusion for example, help stimulate the body’s natural mitochondrial activity without any disruption or damage. Because cellular energy in the form of ATP (adenosine tri phosphate) is manufactured in the mitochondria, the result of the use of these amazing technologies is younger, firmer and smoother looking skin – instantly. No damage, no trauma, no discoloration or discomfort.
These technologies certainly meet the definition of non-invasive, and if a technology could be considered organic – microcurrent, LED and oxygen infusion would be at the top of the list!

Some of the most forward-thinking fun technology that has become available to the skin therapist recently is the newest breed of hand-held battery operated devices that are used to “peel and penetrate”. They are powered by ultrasound technology creating vibrations up to 28K Hz in a flat metal peeling spatula. When used in conjunction with a well formulated exfoliation product, the combination can create perfectly exfoliated skin in minutes.
After the exfoliation step, the same technology can be used with a decongesting product to perform thorough extractions. If you like extractions, you must have this tool!
