beauty up by 21% Sales of certified organic health and beauty products increased by 21.6% in 2015 to £54.2 million, according to The Soil Association’s 2016 Organic Market Report.
The report also reveals that consumers spent an extra £800,000 a week on Soil Association certified health and beauty products in 2015.
The sustained interest in organic health and beauty is partly driven by a general interest in wellness and wellbeing, along with an increase in young and socially conscious consumers who have strong social, ethical and environmental values, say the Association.
Currently, 43% of consumers look for a certification symbol when they buy a natural or organic personal care product and people are more interested in making sure the products they put on their skin and bodies are truly organic.
Clare McDermott, Soil Association Business Development Director, says: “The organic beauty market is flourishing with increased sales, product launches, availability and greater consumer engagement within the sector. Organic beauty continues to thrive and the next 12 months look to be even stronger.”

Louise Allan was named ‘Best Salon Manager’, and Emma Taos as ‘Most Improved Employee’. Sian Fenwick was presented with ‘Most Passionate Employee’ whilst Lauren Allan was recognised for ‘Best Customer Service’.

Facial massage theme
for Chicago seminar A Yorkshire skin care specialist was invited to talk about the anti-ageing effects of facial massage at the Face and Body Midwest Spa, Conference and Expo in Chicago.
Dr Katerina Steventon, from Beverley in East Yorkshire, was the only European speaker on the rostrum at the three-day conference and addressed the audience of skin care and wellness professionals on ‘Professional Facial Massage: An Evidence-based Anti-ageing Treatment’.
Dr Steventon runs independent skin care consultancy, FaceWorkshops using her PhD in skin science combined with her professional facial therapy training to provide clients with a bespoke package of scientifically validated products combined with facial therapies.
Cloud Spa strengthens Board
Sarah Noble has joined the Board of Cloud Spa, an expanding chain of beauty salons positioned in the departure lounges of Stansted, Birmingham, East Midlands and Manchester airports.
With over 35 years’ experience, Sarah has been responsible for project managing the strategy and pre-opening of numerous five-star award- winning Spas, anti-ageing clinics and wellness centres globally, as well as consulting for the likes of Harrods and The Ritz.
Sarah joins the board ahead of plans for growth in additional UK airports this year and key European airports over the next five years.
Dr Katerina Steventon Industry optimism increases
Salon owners and mobile workers are feeling optimistic, with 76% saying that 2015 was a good year for them with increased sales and clients, according to a new report.
The fifth annual Salon Services’ Beautiful Britain report provides a detailed look into the UK’s hair and beauty industry, surveying over 1,300 respondents including salon workers, salon managers and mobile workers. The report reveals that 58% of respondents are more optimistic about their business than they were a year ago.
Overall, treatment prices remained stable in 2015 compared with the previous year, but this still represents a sharp drop from 2012. Since then, both female and male treatment prices have dropped significantly, most likely in an attempt to attract customers and maintain customer loyalty, with 78% of respondents blaming customers shopping around for the cheapest deals.
However, the good news, says the report, is that across the board clients are leaving less time between treatments. This has led to an increase in the average customer’s yearly spend on baskets of treatments (including haircut, colour, tan and manicure). For women, it was an increase of 19% from £702 in 2014 to £876 in 2015.
