Arts Education Center offers interactive space and the Rendell Room is prized for its acoustics.

The Academy of Music, a Philadelphia landmark that dates back to 1857, is the oldest grand opera house in the U.S. This Renaissance Revival-style building was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1963,and its sheer beauty is an attraction to planners of events.

A $40 million modernization in 2009 included seating restoration, a new stage floor and shell, various upgrades, raising the roof and more. For the first time in its history, the Academy’s crystal chandelier was removed and renovated, too.

Another draw to both the Kimmel Center and The Academy of Music is the prodi- gious culinary talent of Chef Jose Garces. A Food Network Iron Chef of America,he brings hismouth-wateringmenus to a full- service event planning division in opera- tion at both venues.

“One of the reasons our events are so unique,” says Vicki Pohl, Garces Events director of catering sales,“is that not only is the building itself a true gem of archi- tecture, but the cuisine and hospitality provided exclusively by Garces Events is something equally spectacular. The catering team customizes menus that reflect the inspired hospitality and unpar- alleled cuisine you consistently find in Garces Restaurants, creating an amazing overall guest experience.”

“Often, we combine the artistry of per- formers into the entertainment for an event,” Pohl continues. “One event, for instance, occurred in the Commonwealth Plaza, and during dinner acrobats per- formed while repelling down the side of Verizon Hall. We've handled events with Spanish tapas cuisine and live Flamenco dancers, as well as Parisian-themed galas with light shows conducted froma 90-foot tall replica of the Eiffel Tower. We host weddings, social affairs, movie premiers, corporate events, fund raisers, and more.”

Its illustrious art collection includes some of the world’s finest examples of post- impressionistic and early modern works, as well as African and other non-western pieces, decorative works and more. Since its center city launch, more than 500 events have been held here for groups ranging from 25 to 800 people.

When asked what makes the Barnes such a great place for group events, director of event operations for the venue, David C. Perez, replied, “The Barnes Foundation has a striking combination of legendary art and award-winning modern architec-
