What is it about October that brings out the beast in dogs? Could it be their humans rushing about, dressing them up in funny costumes? We overheard one dog-lover remark, “What we do for our dogs.” We think it’s the other way around, as dogs want to do nothing but please us, and become willing participants in all things Halloween all across Florida. Here is just a sampling. Photography by Anna Cooke.

Fluffy Puppies Bark-O-Ween

Costume creativity reigns at the Annual Pet Costume Contest at Pet Food Warehouse in St. Petersburg. This is a tough competition. But, the best part, all proceeds from the entry fees go to Pet Pal Animal Shelter. (Above): Yoda, a six- year-old Pug who came dressed as one of the three little Pugs. The ghosts and goblins were out during the 8th Annual Fluffy Puppies Barkoween, at O’Keefe’s in Clearwater. Proceeds this year benefited Canine Estates Sanctuary and Rescue of Palm Harbor. The grand prize winner won a dog-friendly two-night stay package at TradeWinds Island Resorts, courtesy of The New Barker. Before the event, guests browsed among the dozen or so dog- related vendors. The contest, complete with a panel of judges, was emceed by Kristen Levine. (Above): Newly-adopted Coco Snider;
