Maxwell Smart and Muggle are Border Terriers. “Border Terriers were used during World War II to sniff out bombs,” said Kathy Feeney. She has been bringing Maxwell and Muggle to Fuzzie Buddies since 2003, the year they opened. She considers Edie and Mary, the facility’s manager and the staff family. “They have gotten me through some pretty tough times over the years,” she told us. “More than family, they’re like my wingmen. I know they have my back when it comes to taking care of my dogs.” As a travel writer, Kathy was on

assignment in Europe when she broke her leg. The dogs were already boarding at Fuzzie Buddies when Kathy called Edie to let her know she would be stay- ing in a hospital in Englad for awhile. “It was comforting to know that all I had to do was pick up the phone to let Edie know what was going on, and that Maxwell and Muggle would be well taken care of.” The dogs were also boarded during a two-week period after Kathy was diagnosed with cancer and had to have surgery. “Edie and Mary surprised me by bringing Muggle to see me in the hospital,” she said. Kathy considers Maxwell and

Muggle her therapy dogs. Her doctor credits them for saving her life, especial- ly after the tragic death of her hus- band.”At first, I didn't know how I was going to handle everything. I needed time to grieve; to get things in order. Again, Edie and her staff came through and kept Max and Muggle for me. It was such a relief knowing that they were being loved and nurtured. Something I knew I wasn’t capable of doing at the time.”

Once they were home, she realized

how happy the dogs made her and other people. Muggles at 13 and Max at 11 have always been old souls. “Max is empathic. He picks up on things, not just my emotions, but physical things. After I broke my leg, he had to have ACL surgery. After I had a hysterectomy, he had to have surgery to remove a tumor. A friend told me to talk to Max, to tell him it wasn’t necessary to take on all of these things in an effort to help me. I’m always reassuring him that everything is okay.” (Continued on following page.)
