The goal of the Guardian Angel Program at Pet Pal Animal Shelter in St. Petersburg is to bring in and adopt out more Pit Bulls and Pit Bull mixes. While at the shelter, all Pit Bull Terriers and Pit mixes receive temperament testing and evaluations from cer- tified trainers. Once the dogs have been assessed, a training regimen is put into place to keep them active and motivated during their stay at the shelter. Upon adoption, with the

Services (now known as Hillsborough County Pet Resource Center). She raised money to create a dog park at Animal Services so that the dogs, espe-

cially those held indefinitely as part of animal abuse investigations, would have a place to play, and just be dogs. One day in 2006 Karyn Ringhaver, who volunteered at the shelter, decided to ask shelter employees what they needed most. When they said “a park” Karyn immediately sent out an email to friends asking for money. She could not believe the response - $11,000. That’s the kind of friend Karyn was. She didn’t need all of it to build Jagger Park, named after her Yellow Labrador Retriever who died from cancer in November, 2007. So, she earmarked the remainder for a medical fund, called the Jagger Park Fund. Karyn Ringhaver, 66, died August 19, 2014 of

complications from acute lymphoblastic leukemia. She was surrounded by her loving humans and canine family members. As with everything else Karyn did, she fought her disease with grace, strength and determination, inspiring her family and many friends.
