The bright, bold illustrations by Daniel Roode embody Bethenny’s style and the cute references such as “Bark Jacobs” or “Starbarks” will even get a few laughs out of adults. This is a perfect gift for children between the ages three and six. We interviewed Bethenny Frankel, exclusively for

The New Barker about her book. TNB: What was your inspiration for writing Cookie

Meets Peanut? Bethenny: You know I have a baby that was about to

meet my dog, who was my original furry baby. That’s a challenging dynamic. It’s about the introduction of the two of them.

TNB: How did you get Cookie to interact positively

with Bryn in the beginning? Bethenny: You don’t. It’s like any other relationship. You

just have to be patient and give it time. You kind of let them work it out on their own, you can’t really force it. TNB: Do you have any parenting advice to those who

are bringing their first baby home to their diva-like dog, with a personality similar to Cookie’s? Bethenny: I think you just have to be patient. You just

have to make certain you don’t have a situation where your dog is dangerous and you’re nervous for your kid’s safety. But I think like anything else, you have to realize it will take time and that they have to develop a trust between them. TNB: When did you realize that Cookie had accepted

Bryn? Bethenny: Well, it just evolved. Cookie is a protector

and she protects me. I realized that Cookie was not being jealous. She just doesn’t want anyone messing with her fam- ily. Cookie just started sniffing Bryn and started sleeping near her bed. Initially Bryn (also known as the Peanut) was- n’t interested in Cookie. That kind of evolved to where now all Byrn wants to do is really endear herself to Cookie. Now that Cookie is older, she just wants to protect and be included. TNB: How has your relationship with Cookie evolved

since having Bryn? Bethenny: You know, it’s love. Your dog is all about

unconditional love, and I think kids are proud to have a dog. They want everyone to know that this is my dog. TNB: Are there any activities that you still do with just

Cookie? Bethenny: No, everyone is together. We are a family, and

Your pets’ teeth are just as important to them, as yours are to you.

do everything together. TNB: How would you describe Cookie’s personality? Bethenny: Protective, sassy, tough and loyal. TNB: Our editorial staff at The New Barker feel it is

important to continue to highlight the bond between a child and their pet. Why do you feel it’s important for children to grow up with pets? Bethenny: I think pets teach kids about responsibility.

Pets instill loyalty. A dog must be walked and fed every day. They rely on us for their health and well-being. It’s a good lesson for children to learn to care for another

living being. www.TheNewBarker.com
