“But, he was very well optimized on medications, so despite his multiple illnesses and poor prognosis, Franklin continued to lead a happy, tail-wagging life, right until the end,” said Monisha. In October 2013, Franklin died as a result of gastric bloat, a life- threatening emergency. The mortality rate for gastric volvulus approaches 50 percent. Bloat refers to two conditions: Gastric dilatation is when the stomach distends with gas and fluid. Volvulus is the second condition where the distended stomach rotates on its long axis. Soon after, Anthony and Monisha donated $25,000 to the

University of Florida Fellowship Program and created the Franklin Cardiology Fellowship. “We loved the level of care every- one provided Franklin there, and wanted to do something to help the program, while honoring our dog,” said Monisha. “The Franklin Cardiology Fellowship extends the cardiology residency program at the University of Florida Small Animal Hospital to include an extra year of fellowship research. Supporting The Franklin Cardiology Fellowship enriches the cardiology resi- dency program, and makes possible new advances in the diag- nosis and treatment of veterinary cardiac disease,” she added. Of course, Franklin’s memory lives on through Franklin’s

Friends as well. “There is no doubt that Franklin was a very spe- cial dog. Not only did he alleviate my fear of dogs, his presence made us more aware of the plight of homeless dogs. We will always be thankful to the SPCA of Central Florida for providing a shelter until Franklin found us,” said Monisha. “He opened my eyes to how many dog lovers there are, and made me realize that the love of a dog can inspire us to do anything.”

Bloat can occur in any dog at any age, but typically occurs in middle-aged to older dogs. Large breeds with deep chests are anatomically predisposed to bloat. Classic signs of bloat are restlessness and

pacing, salivation, retching, unproductive attempts to vomit and enlargement of the abdomen. Early recognition and treatment are the keys to survival. The SPCA of Central Florida is now the Pet Alliance of

Greater Orlando. There are two Central Florida locations: 2727 Conroy Road, Orlando/407.351.7722 and 2800 County Home Road, Sanford/407.323.8685. Visit PetAllianceOrlando.org. For more information on RAIN (Rescuing Animals In Need)
