Many senior citizens and their companion pets share a lot in common. They struggle with day-to-day survival, adequate shelter, nourishing food and proper health care. They often forego purchasing medicine or food for themselves in order to provide for their pets. And, they generally have no voice.

Check with your local shelter to see if they have an outreach program that will provide pet food for the homebound who have pets in need. These programs depend on the community for their donations of pet food. And right now, supplies are low across the state. Next time you’re buying dog or cat food for your family pets, consider grabbing an extra bag or a couple of cans and delivering them to your local shelter. Specify how you would like your donation to be used.
