We built a bunch of hutches and had a slew of bunnies. I may have gotten the bug to work with animals around that time, but not having any mentors or pro- fessional role models in my family, it was difficult to see myself as a veterinarian. After all, I came from a blue collar fami- ly and “certainly didn’t have the aptitude to be a doctor.” Fast forward to post high school: I

enrolled at St. Petersburg Junior College and received an AA degree in Police Administration. Since I grew up playing cops and robbers, I thought this would be an acceptable career. I went on to the University of South Florida and earned my sociology degree to pursue a career with the Treasury Department (Elliot Ness was one of my childhood idols). I took a couple years off from college and worked with Ron and Joy Holiday, trav- eling around the country as an illusionist (Siegfried and Roy style, complete with dance and a large cat show). It was while I was in the green room, waiting to go on stage in Minneapolis that I finished read- ing a soft cover book called Zoo Vet. I had an epiphany and called my girlfriend Nancy back home after the show and told her the news. She was very support- ive of the idea of me becoming a veteri- narian. Nancy became my wife shortly thereafter, and she helps me manage our veterinary practice in St. Petersburg. Central Animal Hospital Fourth Street, St. Petersburg. 727.521.3518.
