nergy watchdog Ofgem has warned the government that the danger of electricity power shortages is set to soar and with only 2% spare capacity in the National Grid, the regulator recently urged British industry to find new ways to slash their electricity consumption. So with energy prices already high and with capacity running out, it can only mean energy costs are likely to rise further still. Everyone wants to save money on their energy bills, and commercial swimming pool operators are no different. Constant lighting and heating are one thing, but in addition, there’s also treatment and maintenance too. Add them all up and there’s no wonder bills are escalating and running a commercial pool is becoming an increasingly tough challenge. According to a recent survey, the British public currently has access to just under 4,700 swimming pools across the UK. In these tough economic times, you can guarantee most of them will be under pressure to find operating cost savings or ways to get more of the public through their doors and raise much needed revenues. This is particularly true for a number of the older facilities. The good news is that over the last couple of years, numerous products have become available to help pool operators improve their facilities and help them run more efficiently – the vast majority of these products also satisfy the need to be ‘green’ too. Despite funds being tight, more and more commercial pools are making the investments in new, innovative products and realising the cost savings that can be made and the sector is one that remains relatively buoyant. With so many new products now available, there are numerous options to help pool owners to save on costs and increase revenues but we take a look at ten that can help commercial operators to improve their facilities and bottom lines.

Heatsavr works by forming an invisible layer across the surface of the pool water, trapping water and moisture much in the same way as a traditional pool cover does. However, unlike traditional covers, Heatsavr still works when bathers are present in the pool water, albeit to a lesser degree. It is also well suited to pools which face periods of ‘down time’ during the day, when drawing a traditional cover to reduce vital heat and moisture loss is simply not practical. Heatsavr was first introduced to the UK
01) HEATSAVR, THE ORIGINAL LIQUID POOL COVER
It is difficult to imagine that in spite of ever increasing energy costs, many commercial swimming pools in the UK remain uncovered at night. The reality is that up to 65% of the energy used within a leisure centre will be used for pool heating and ventilation so controlling costs within the swimming pool hall is absolutely vital. As councils struggle to manage local facility budgets, the threat of pools facing closure is rapidly becoming a reality.
The good news is that energy bills really can be lowered by using a pool cover, sometimes by as much as 30%, resulting in an actual spend reduction in the region of £10,000 - £15,000 per annum (based on a standard 25 x 10m pool). Apart from the obvious saving on water heating, Heatsavr’s ability to reduce evaporation means less load on the
dehumidification plant and a subsequent reduction in energy usage.
market ten years ago and having initially been rejected by those incredulous of its claims, has established itself as a genuine energy saving solution and there are now over 300 commercial pools in the UK using Heatsavr to control their energy expenditure. Simple to use and with virtually no capital outlay required, apart from the cost of the pump kit, Heatsavr is the perfect solution for commercial pools, eager for a quick payback on investment.

02) CERTIKIN LIGHTS THE WAY WITH LED LIGHTING
The one guaranteed way of reducing running costs on a pool at the same time as enhancing its ambience is by the installation of Ultra Bright LED lighting.
The Certikin LED light offers staggering lamp life of up to 100,000 hours, that’s about 11 years if left on permanently! Due to their brightness (4,320 lumens) they are ideal for commercial pools. They use less than 25% of the energy used by traditional 300W pool lights. They are environmentally
