design and installation process. In areas that could potentially be hazardous, it is vital that the right products are specified and that they are up to the task. Original Style’s Dorset Woolliscroft range was created with these considerations in mind and is made up of superior quality tiles that offer high levels of slip resistance.
The collection complies with all industry standards and the products have been rigorously tested for their slip resistant properties. Tests include independent scrutiny by CERAM, the world’s experts in material testing. The tiles are hard wearing and suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications. With high PTVWs (Pendulum Test Value wet) on Luna, Pinhead, Tetra and Multidisc the range offers endless design solutions for the specifier.
and a two-part epoxy resin. It is laid 6mm thick on to almost any clean, dry substrate such as screed, concrete (if trowel finished) or timber. Being flexible, it is excellent at covering uneven or cracked surfaces. The substrate should include provision for any drainage required since water passes through the sundeck and will flow into the drainage provided at the substrate level. Sundeck is offered in ten attractive colours; motifs and colourways can also be incorporated.
DON’T WATER DOWN YOUR SAFETY ADVICE With the HSE’s new portable test for commercial pools’ slipperiness, it’s easy to forget the importance of safeguarding residential customers. Whether clients are getting on in life, disabled, or simply include families with young children, poolside safety should always be a prime concern for swimming pool professionals. That’s where Golden Coast comes in. Their range of residential waterside safety equipment – for swimming pools, hot tubs and saunas – includes everything from handrails, ladders and safety rope, to drainage channels and textured coping and paving.
When it comes to safe, textured paving around the outside of the pool, the ability to have an entirely matching swimming pool hard landscape surround – from patio paving to the coping stones at the water’s edge – can be achieved through Golden Coast’s range of Cranbourne Stone pavings. Using natural materials, Cranbourne hand-crafted ‘sculptured’ stone can produce an old, new, cottage or contemporary effect, matching the setting to create a perfect pool surround and avoiding the usual stark difference between coping stones and the surrounding hard landscape. There is a range of natural textured stone for regular sized pools, whilst Cranbourne

can create made-to-measure designs to suit bespoke pools. It is even possible to have steps leading into the water crafted in the same material.
Customers can choose from a truly eclectic catalogue of paving and coping stones in smooth simulated white stone, textured sandstone, natural riven sandstone, fossil pearl limestone, graphite grey limestone or grey flamed granite.

PLASTIC EXTRUDERS SPLASH SAFETY
The 4,600 or more public pools and many thousands of school pools scattered across the UK are great places to have fun, get fit and stay cool, they can also be fraught with danger. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents estimates that on average there are over 40,000 slip and fall related accidents in schools and leisure facilities. In older swimming pools especially, where design used to be more about aesthetics rather than safety, users slipping on ceramic and smooth floors is still an ongoing problem.
Therapeutic Matting From Heronrib CASE STUDY
Heronrib matting, manufactured by Plastic Extruders Ltd, is being enjoyed by visitors and patients at a new physiotherapy pool in an orthopaedic rehabilitation hospital in Athens, Greece.
The matting is installed throughout the tiled pool area, the access steps, pool surrounds, walkways and showers in order to provide a safe surface which is slip
resistant, warm and comfortable to stand on. Cable ties have been used to secure the matting on the steps to ensure they remained stable for users – even when covered with water.
Heronrib is manufactured from hardwearing non-porous vinyl with a two layer open grid construction and channelled underbars to help water drain away easily in all directions. The matting has an embossed slip resistant surface and impregnated anti- bacterial and anti-fungal additives. This ensures that it is not only safe underfoot but also hygienic for bare feet because it reduces the risk of cross-contamination. It also makes it ideal for use in hospital, healthcare and other hygiene-sensitive environments.
The matting, available in several colours, is supplied in 10m long rolls and widths of 50cm, 1m and 1.22m.
