NEWS IN BRIEF

REPORT SAYS 84% OF BRITONS LIVE WITHIN TWO MILES OF A POOL

More than four in five Britons (84%) live within two miles of a public or privately owned swimming pool with some form of public access. The figure comes from The 2013 State of the UK Swimming Industry Report produced by The Leisure Database Company, which shows that there are now 3,296 swimming sites containing 4,670 separate swimming pools in the UK. The number of swimming sites has remain largely static with a decrease of 0.5% between 2012 and 2013, but future investment will be needed in the UK’s swimming pool estate, as 44% of the public swimming pool stock was built before 1980. The full report which delivers key intelligence on the market can be ordered at www. theleisuredatabase.com and is priced at £205 + VAT.

HISTORIC REGENERATION PROJECT GOES AHEAD

Certikin Celebrates 50 Years In Style

In celebration of the company’s 50th Anniversary, Certikin Managing Director, Neil Murray this month hosted a Black Tie Dinner Dance in the luxurious surroundings of Wokefield Park Hotel, set in 250 acres of stunning landscaped grounds near Reading. Guests enjoyed a champagne reception on the terrace overlooking manicured lawns with the occasion blessed by warm evening sunshine. This was followed by a sumptuous three-course dinner in the flower festooned, candlelit dining room of the hotel’s 18th century Mansion House.

MD Neil Murray gave a speech thanking customers for their loyalty and support and highlighting some of the company’s history over the last five decades. He ended his speech by announcing the retirement of Certikin’s Chairman, Patrick Thorpe and presented him with a picture of the Bodleian Library in Oxford as a small token of appreciation for his 36 years of dedication and long service to the company. The formalities over, Neil then introduced the guest speaker – the country’s most decorated male swimmer Mark Foster who gave an entertaining after-dinner speech in which he regaled guests with humorous insights into his illustrious career. Chosen as the flag bearer to lead out Team GB at the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics, Mark has won 47 international medals; competed in five Olympics,

been eight times Commonwealth champion, ten times European champion and eight times World record holder. Out of the pool, Mark has become a familiar face on television, most recently co-hosting the London 2012 Olympic swimming with Clare Balding and appearing in the BBC’s ‘Strictly Come Dancing’. Guests then got to their feet and danced to the band, The Chip Shop Boys who provided one and a half hours of rousing live entertainment with big music hits from the sixties to the present day. This was followed by a lively disco with the dance floor packed out well into the early hours. All in all, it was a memorable occasion to mark a memorable half-century. Having attended the event as guests, the SPN team were delighted for Certikin that the evening was such as success. “We appreciate the effort that must have gone in to staging such an event. A superb choice of venue and great turnout from

the industry set the evening up perfectly and from what we saw everyone that attended had a fantastic night which seemed to go without a hitch. We’re sure it has been viewed by all involved as a job well done,” commented SPN Editor Jon Wadeson. Certikin would like to thank the following suppliers for supporting the anniversary event: Calorex, Coverstar, EMEC, Righton Fasteners, Fix A Leak, Fluvo, Freight Watch, Lonza, Malvern Boilers, Maytronics, Starline, Van Erp, Hart Site Services, Bowman, Premier Telephones, Robert Horne, PPG, La Reter, Pro Tool, Parcels To Ireland, Arcobeleno, Hacklings, Pool ID, TNT, Tintometer, Rigo, Fluidra.
