PRIMARY SCHOOL SWIMMING NEEDS QUALIFIED TEACHERS, SAYS RAPS A new initiative that looks to make swimming safer and ensure a minimum standard of quality and professionalism is maintained by swimming teachers has stated the importance of fully qualified staff in teaching young people to swim. The Register of Aquatic Professionals (RAPs) recently launched its pilot phase, which by professionalising staff, will help protect the public. With primary school children among those who call on the services of swimming teachers, RAPs will be an important part of the skills infrastructure.

William voiced support for a campaign by the Amateur Swimming Association (ASA) which calls for every child to be given the opportunity to learn to swim. A report from the ASA found that half of children aged seven to eleven can’t swim the length of a typical swimming pool (25 metres) unaided, despite swimming being a compulsory element of the national curriculum.

RAPs has been developed by SkillsActive with key members of the aquatics industry, including the ASA as well as the Swimming Teachers’ Association (STA) and Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS).

Golden Coast’s Striking New Showroom Wows Visitors

Golden Coast is showcasing some of the world’s most innovative new pool, sauna and hot tub products directly to new dealers in a brand new state-of-the-art showroom that’s been wowing customers, dealers and journalists alike. World-class technologies from Californian hot tub maker Sundance Spas and Swedish sauna giant Tylö are being demonstrated in this real world setting, allowing dealers to see the products for themselves first-hand. Designed as a mini-expo that’s open all year round, the new showroom provides a space for dealers to meet the Golden Coast team face-to- face, chat about their support packages and read the latest brochures and literature at their leisure. Through its 35 years serving the wet leisure industry, one thing Golden Coast has learned is that customers are much more likely to buy if they can look, touch and feel.

“Pictures, brochures and sales talk are simply not enough,” explains Golden Coast’s Managing Director Jamie Adams. “Ideally, customers should be able to see the whole product, set up as in real life. “In our new demonstration showroom, visitors can experience our products in all their glory, rather than simply look at a picture before deciding to buy. Here they can see five stunning hot tubs from California’s Sundance Spas – one of which is actually running – together with three impressive, fully equipped Tylö saunas.... along with a huge selection of spa and pool accessories.” However, not all companies have the sufficient space to showcase products on this scale. To help its customers give theirs a full flavour of the wet

Waterco Helps To Keep The Airways Clean effluent and jet fuel.

When Ecolab was approached by a leading airline to solve an effluent problem arising from the exterior washing of their large fleet of aircraft, Waterco were pleased to be able to help in the design and supply of the filtration equipment. Previously, potable water was being utilised for the washing process and the waste water generated from this activity was collected in an underground pit. The pit then had to be emptied on a weekly or more frequent basis, the waste being disposed of via a waste facility at a huge expense. The challenge was to develop a system that could remove an array of contaminants from the water and allow the water to be reused for washing aircraft a n umber of times therefore minimising both potable water usage and waste generated. The effluent being generated from the washing of aircraft contained a combination of fine solids, hydrocarbons, phenols, detergents, grease, oils, waste

However due to space

restrictions the complete plant had to be skid mounted and portable. Ecolab proposed a fully automatic four stage filtration unit incorporating the Waterco SMD filtration system with final pH correction and biological control. The effluent waste from the wash process was collected in the underground storage tank, water was drawn from the tank via a pump mounted on the skid unit and into the first stage of the filtration process to remove the larger suspended solids, this water was further filtered through a second stage ultra filtration unit before entering the carbon filter for removal of the detergents. The final stage of the filter process was

a reverse osmosis unit to remove the dissolved solids. Filtered water is transferred to a 10,000 litre secondary treatment tank and continuously re circulated. Due to the corrosive nature of the aircraft structure, a pH correction system is fitted to maintain a pH of 7.0. An ORP controller is also included to maintain the required level of oxidising biocide on a consistent basis. The captured water is then used to both apply foam detergent onto the aircraft exterior and after agitation used to rinse the cleaned area. The results have been exceptional, with the water quality being supplied exceeding all expectations. It has also led to considerable saving on both water usage and waste generation compared to the existing system.

leisure experience, Golden Coast regularly devises and supplies compact demonstration units. These currently include a Tylö ‘virtual’ sauna and a water-tight, briefcase-sized Spectravision pool lighting display. “It’s very much in our own interest to help our trade customers market the products, as our success is wholly dependent on theirs,” says Jamie. “We are always looking for new and interesting ways to support and inspire their work. What better way to demonstrate the principles of an effective showroom to our customers than to actually build one ourselves?”
