PIP: Promoting The Industry
here will be regular updates from Jamie Adams and the PIP Committee in SPN about what is going on in terms of promoting the
industry. PIP is vitally important as it is the company that reflects on what the industry needs to promote itself and is therefore more ‘blue sky thinking’ in its approach. However, there are various tasks that it gets done and in this issue of SPN, there are updates on the websites and some of the other resources that are being produced.
PR AND MARKETING SUPPORT Following the departure of Lana Suhova, Jan Hardy and Alison Jones have been picking up as much of the work as they can juggle. Discussions are underway about replacing Lana and an update is expected in September.
There has been liaison with publishers and journalists about magazine articles being requested. BISHTA has had enquiries from film makers about documentaries they have in the pipeline. Members are always alerted about these updates to see if they can help with the promotion.
WEBSITES
The value of a good website cannot be under estimated and despite limited resources, the BSPF have recently revamped the

design of their website and added some additional pages. With a WordPress Content Management System (CMS) now also in place, this will allow the BSPF office to make regular updates, when required. The SPATA and BISHTA websites have recently been transferred to a new web host, after benefitting from the support of Alex Kemsley at Waterstream. The plan is to tidy up the existing websites and then to have a redesign so that they are more appealing to consumers. This work is currently being discussed at the PIP Committee meetings.
FACTSHEETS AND OTHER MATERIALS BISHTA consumer factsheets are currently being developed, with the help of Dorian Davies at Doric Marketing and other members of the BISHTA Committee and BISHTA Technical Committee. A series of topics will be uploaded on the BISHTA website and SPATA already has available a number of their own consumer factsheets.
On an ongoing basis, there are also a series of member factsheets being developed and the latest one has been drafted by Will Dando at Plastica on pool covers. SPATA (and BISHTA) are always grateful to its members for sharing knowledge in a constant bid to enhance the professionalism of the industry. If anyone has a suggestion for a factsheet
Ever since the Gala Dinner at SPATEX this year, the film produced by Bob Kent and Patrick Thorpe about the history of the industry has been provoking thoughts on how best the industry can promote itself. Over the years, SPATEX has provided funds for a number of initiatives and the SPATA / BISHTA members have also contributed funds towards PR. Copies of the film are available for those that have not yet seen it and it was financially supported by PIP and a number of sponsors, to whom PIP is very grateful. The pool industry promoted itself at Grand Designs Live London and attention will now switch to the event in Birmingham later this year. The hot tub industry was also represented at this show though Hydropool. The commercial pool sector will have exposure at the forthcoming Leisure Industry Week (LIW) being held in Birmingham. SPATA will be there along with a number of other companies, including a number of SPATA members. There should be a timely boost for the Pool and Spa Industry with the first ever EUSA European Pool and Spa Awards to be held at aquanale in Cologne in October. There will be some UK entries competing with colleagues from up to 11 other European countries in the following three categories: Domestic Outdoor Pool, Domestic Indoor Pool and Domestic Hot Tub/Spa.
INTERNAL COMMUNICATIONS These continue with the weekly ENews sent out every Friday, containing bited sized bits of information on topics of interest to the members. Although members will not always have time to read the items every week, they can be reassured that regular information is being sent to them when they do have a moment to see the latest information!
ONLINE MEETINGS
The growth of communication via LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter continues to challenge the industry to try and keep up with these developments. The PIP Committee have chosen to dispense with some of their face to face meetings (usually in Andover) in favour of more regular and shorter meetings online via WebEx. The system is free to use (via computer, although there would be a charge if using your phone instead). The use of WebEx provides attendees with the luxury of not having to travel from their office (or home) and therefore makes it more efficient. WebEx has also been used by a number of the other companies within the wider BSPF family to develop documents, discuss standards and liaise with colleagues in other parts of Europe and also North America. Some companies recently accessed WebEx to learn more about the proposed European domestic pool standards being consulted upon. SPN
