Despite the relatively strong fi gure, analysts said the outlook for the rest of the year remained uncertain – I guess the same could be said of trying to predict the UK’s weather accurately too!
Well what a difference a couple of months can make. The two biggest factors affecting the success of many within our industry have changed dramatically and it’s positive news for all concerned. Firstly (and I really don’t want this to become a regular theme, but it is crucial to so many) there’s the sustained heatwave that the UK has been going through which has meant the hottest temperatures in seven years, peaking at 33.5°C in London and providing the hottest day since 20 July 2006. The dramatic increase in heat coincided with Certikin celebrating their 50th anniversary with an impressive party – perhaps it was the weather gods’ way of showing their approval for the company reaching this landmark, or was it that mysterious Jetstream that is referred to so often? Whatever the reason, lets hope that it continues for as long as possible as it has proved to be a real shot in the arm to the industry and is way, way overdue.
Secondly, the UK economy grew an estimated 0.6% in the three months to June. According to the Offi ce for National Statistics (ONS), output grew in all of the construction, manufacturing, services and agriculture sectors meaning the economy has now recouped more than half of the 7.2% of output lost during the 2008-09
recession. The 0.6% seasonally-adjusted growth rate was in line with market expectations, and was up from 0.3%
Both events though are clearly great news for our industry. Of course there’s the immediate but short-term benefi t of the industry being busy due to the scorching weather, but perhaps more importantly, the economy really is picking up. Whilst I don’t claim to be any kind of economic expert, I am a business owner and a consumer and I know and appreciate the effect good news about the economy can have on both. Good economic news gives consumers that all-important confi dence which for many, has been missing for so long. And as we all know, confi dent consumers will, sooner or later, start to spend.
So with that in mind, now is the perfect time for wet leisure businesses to look at their marketing efforts and capitalise on the current ‘feel good’ factor, as chances are it won’t last for too long. In this issue, well-known industry fi gure Dorian Davies of Doric Marketing does exactly that. There’s also a great piece on not relying on the UK weather for a successful business, as after all (and as mentioned above), the recent weather is the best we have had for seven long years so it just can’t be relied upon!
There’s also some great features on Commercial Pools, Water Testing, Hot Tub Technology, Safety Flooring and much more – as you’ll discover. So I won’t keep you any longer and I hope you enjoy reading the rest of this edition of SPN, after all I’m sure you are busier than normal!
Have a great summer. Jon Wadeson – Editor You can now follow SPN on:
