POOL & SPA INDUSTRY

A Busy Time For The Industry, Both At Home And Abroad

CHRIS HAYES, BSPF MANAGING DIRECTOR LOOKS AT THE MONTHS AHEAD AND WHAT IS SHAPING UP TO BE A HECTIC PERIOD FOR THOSE INVOLVED IN THE INDUSTRY BOTH DOMESTICALLY AND INTERNATIONALLY

T

he next few months will be important for our industry with the ending of public consultation on the domestic pool standards (EN 16582 Parts 1 to 3) and the finalisation of some more European standards for domestic swimming pools, this time on water filtration, circulation and treatment. The Public Consultation for these water related standards is likely to be at the end of this year, or early next year. It has been very useful to get feedback from the industry on what their view on the new standards has been. Rest assured, all of the relevant comments are being fed back to BSI for their consideration.

The autumn is always a busy time for our industry, both at home and abroad, with events and meetings being held regularly throughout this period. The European standards meetings are due to be held in Berlin (September) and in Paris (September/ October) and John Scott will be chairing the last of the formal EUSA meetings being held in the UK. The meeting is in Oxford this September and there will be an update on the EUSA European Pool and Spa Awards with nominations from up to 12 countries being confirmed imminently, to be judged ahead of the presentation at aquanale in October.

Apart from aquanale, there are a number of SPATA sponsors

exhibitions including LIW in the UK and then overseas shows in Las Vegas and Barcelona. New opportunities for business networking may also be available further afield, such as the Qatar Pool Show. Leisure Industry Week (LIW) (24 to 26 September, NEC Birmingham) is fast approaching and with a great deal of attention being shown by the leisure industry, SPATA is again working with UBM Live London (the show organisers) to exhibit at the show and to support its members that are also exhibiting. LIW is the UK’s largest annual gathering of leisure professionals and the Pool & Spa section will be featuring a number of leading suppliers. This year the show will also include a live pool feature called the STA Swim Zone showcasing live demonstrations of baby and children’s swimming lessons, equipment master classes, pool plant operations, lifesaving, exercising in water and more.

The final preparations are being undertaken for the BSPF President’s Weekend and Martin and Delyse Borley would like to extend an invitation for you to join them at their event being held this autumn at the Stanwell House Hotel in Lymington 11 to 13 October in the beautiful New Forest. There are options to attend part, or all of the weekend and further details of the Murder Mystery Evening, or the ‘New Forest Challenge’ are available from the BSPF office.

The industry continues to work hard to overcome the challenges put in front of it, in terms of the weather, the economy and a growing number of regulations impacting on us. I am acutely aware from talking with a number of members and other companies in our industry that income is under constant pressure, as customers demand prices to be reduced. This is a reality, but it is also the case that people will continue to

spend when they believe they are getting value for money. As an illustration of this, I was recently on holiday near Rye in East Sussex and had a number of meals out with my wife during the week. Each of the restaurants served some really lovely food and the welcome was very warm and professional in each of them. However, I can honestly say that the meal that cost the most was also the best perceived value for money, due to a number of factors including the ambience, the quality of the food and the attention to detail by the staff on their service. As an industry, we need to review constantly how well we are all doing on our customer service, if we want to maximise the amount of income that we can secure for our goods and services, rather than seeking to win on the lowest price. This will be made easier if we deliver a high level of quality to all of our customers, who often do appreciate this experience. Finally, I am delighted that in this issue, there is a member focus on Forge Leisure UK (SPATA) and on Sapphire Spas (BISHTA). SPN
