Emily’s ‘eggstraordinary’ business venture

Emily Duffy is one of Sibford’s ‘eggstraordinary’ pupils! In her spare time the Year 8 student runs her own free-range egg delivery business, Duff Eggs. And her business acumen earned her the title of Young Entrpreneur of the Year ... a category especially created after she was nominated for a Banbury Women in Business Award. Jayne Lees of the BWB explained: “While Emily was too young to be put forward for any of our awards, her story was so inspirational, that we could not let it go untold. We therefore decided to give her an award in

recognition of all her hard work and have now introduced the category of Young Entrepreneur in this year’s awards to give all young people out there the opportunity to tell their stories.” Emily looks after a flock of nine hens that lay between 30 and 35 eggs

a week. She sells the eggs to friends and neighbours and reinvests the takings into the business. “Currently turnover is limited by how many eggs our hens can

produce,” said Emily. “But I plan to use the money raised to increase the flock.” Emily believes that part of Duff Eggs’ appeal is the type of eggs available. “The shops sell very plain looking eggs but ours come in a mixture of colours and sizes … we have blue, brown, pink and white,” she explains. “They are very local and very free range … we sometimes have to get the hens out of the bushes in the garden at night … but it does mean the quality is really good.” Duff Eggs has not been without

its problems. “We did suffer a setback when we lost some of our best layers to a fox,” says Emily. “However, there have been more ups than downs. My Dad suggested we enter some of our hens at the Moreton agricultural show and we couldn’t believe it when we got a first and a third for best in class for the hens and a first for the eggs. It now means we are able to offer customers award winning eggs from award winning hens!”
