* * * Seventies

After the success of last year’s Queen tribute, Sibford students had a lot to live up to this year for the annual gig at The Mill Theatre in Banbury. The Music department came up with a 70s inspired

programme, and we were introduced to the sounds our parents grew up with ... classics such as Pink Floyd’s ‘Shine on you Crazy Diamond’; The Jackson 5’s ‘Blame it on the Boogie’; and Rose Royce’s ‘Carwash’. Recreating the sound of the 70s was deceptively difficult and we worked hard in after school clubs to get it right. Some of the melodies were surprisingly intricate, but Matt Platt and Michael Ahmad were always patient and encouraging. Each year, we play two nights, and while for me it was my fourth Mill gig, for many it was the first time playing in this professional atmosphere, so there were a few wobbly knees. Mike Brewis (Syd’s dad), came along to help us with stage presence, and his advice really helped us to enjoy performing, and even smile from time to time! And, for the first time, a student was asked to present the show – hats off to Jake Wilson Wainwright who stepped up and did a great job.

So how did it all sound? I thought we created the best sound yet. Particular highlights were ‘Walking in the Sand’ featuring exuberant drumming from Cory Jones and pitch perfect vocals from Syd Brewis, and ‘Pick up the Pieces’ featuring the funky horn section, particularly Ollie Lorimer. Many people will be used to the brilliance of Tom Smith on guitar, but this year he treated a spell bound audience to his vocal talents as well, performing a Toto cover of the Beatles classic ‘While my Guitar Gentle Weeps’. And all the performers deserve a mention for the finale, ‘Rocking All Over the World’ by Status Quo ... the audience went wild and the atmosphere was electric! If you weren’t there, you missed something very special ... so make sure you get your tickets early for 2013.
