Pupils help make and break the news
Students at Sibford School not only made the headlines but reported on them too when they took part in BBC News School Report Day. A team from the BBC in London visited the school to meet with students and share some trade secrets about how to make a successful news report. And the result, a short film about young
entrepreneurship, hit the airwaves in March. Gilly Roberts of the BBC School Report team said: “It was an absolute delight working with Sibford School. The pupils were incredibly well behaved,
great journalists, wonderful at learning their lines and coming up with ideas. “Although it was a busy day of filming, it was a joy
and everyone involved should be very proud of what they achieved.” In addition to producing the news film, the young
reporters also recorded an interview for BBC Radio 4’s Farming Today programme and contributed live inserts into BBC Oxford’s Breakfast Show. Rosie Weston said: “It was a really good experience and it made me think about journalism as a possible career in the future.” Martha Katz added: “It was interesting to see the
difference between reporting for television and radio. You have to describe things in much more detail for radio … but at least you don’t have to look as good as you would for TV!” The Sibford School news report was inspired by
13-year-old pupil Emily Duffy, whose egg production business was the catalyst for the video (see story right). Other entrepreneurs featured in the report included Toby Seely who carries out bicycle maintenance; Charlie Cooper who operates a car washing venture; wood turner George Purchon; and Peter Oxley, who makes money through his piano playing.
