the Victorians, the Georgians or the Edwardians had got it wrong? Where would London be today? Take the example of the Heygate Estate in Southwark – we’re changing that because it wasn’t right, but it was built less than 40 years ago. I think that’s the real responsibility in architecture, which we sometimes forget.

CM: How do you feel sustainable architecture will develop in the future? DL: Te push for sustainability is obviously important but some aspects of the sustainability agenda are seen independent of architecture, where in fact they

are not. We are spatial creatures and the quality of the places that we occupy and work in and live in is so important to the quality of our lives, or, using a less exciting term, ‘social sustainability’. One of the reasons why London is a global city and continues to be a world-leading absorber of capital is because, relatively speaking, it’s a place to be. People are attracted to the quality of the place. Much of that is down to architecture. We can’t underestimate the importance of architecture in the sustainability agenda. I think architecture will play an increasing role socially and environmentally both in terms of embodied energy, performance efficiency and adaptation.
