996 Taiwan Tower 1 Digital print Peter Cook RA


Cook’s Taiwan Tower proposal, known as the ‘tower of droplets’, is based on the growing of algae in layers of droplets. Te entire tower is inspired by the creation of energy, symbolising the visible energy and optimism.

997 Star Oil Sabrina Rowan Hamilton


Te paintings of Hamilton, who completed formal training at City & Guilds of London Art, are inspired by the world around her. Based on architectural studies of urban life, her paintings tell a story of abandonment and a search to establish a safe place to call home. Te long vertical oil painting exhibited features a tower, which gives the piece an urban quality and allows it to sit comfortably in the architecture room.

Zaha Hadid’s Heydar Aliyev Centre in Azerbaijan began on site in 2007. Te series of digital black and white silver gelatin prints show the large fluid structure, which represents earth mounds emerging from the landscape.

Hadid’s 101,800m² Heydar Aliyev Centre consists of large fluid forms that radiate like waves. Te wave-like forms blur the boundary between the building and the ground, creating external spaces and opportunities.

Zaha Hadid RA


One of only two female Royal Academician architects, Hadid has submitted three pieces of work into this year’s show. Te acrylic painting portrays the concept for the Heydar Aliyev Centre in Baku, Azerbaijan.


1001 No. 283 Paint on mild steel Rana Begum


Influenced by Islamic art and sitting between wall-based and three- dimensional forms, Rana Begum’s work occupys the space between sculpture and painting. No. 283 – made from a large, single sheet of steel – is folded to create overlapping triangles of colour, while casting a contrasting glow around the outer edges of the sculpture.

Tis building’s facades with glazed, vertical coloured and reflective ‘spikes’ superimposed on the horizontal banding of spandrel panels, create a vibrant, oscillating image that changes if seen from different viewpoints.


Tis study for a centrally located, mixed-use scheme will form a brownfield redevelopment. Te proposed development comprises a series of buildings with a mix of uses, including a revamped train station, a hotel, residential and commercial blocks, and a multimedia centre.
