Conceptually, the faceted mask elevation with its colourful, irregular treatment gives character and a strong identity to a building that serves homeless people – a group within society that is frequently ignored.

Tis laser-cut image of the Olympic Stadium, printed on black paper presented in a light box, was developed digitally from one of a series of 18 wood engravings made between 2009 and 2012. Tese engravings chart the changing landscape and the developing architecture of the London Olympic site. Te image was made as part of a collaborative project with Liverpool Hope University’s fine art department.

A Royal Academician for 33 years, Manasseh has six pieces of work in this year’s summer show. Spring – a black ink drawing on paper, which shows flowers sitting in front of a jagged landscape – differs from Manasseh’s coloured ink pieces that were submitted to the exhibition.

Te painting draws inspiration from Peckham in London and Ogmore Vale in South Wales. Te overlapping translucent colours of the sky or the many flecks of colour that together make up a landscape. At the same time their forms can be read as part of the geometry of architecture or the tiny spaces seen between buildings.

Tis piece, artistically composed using watercolours and coloured ink on watercolour paper, depicts flowers in an abstract maze of bright colours. Manasseh’s paintings are known for showing a similar exuberance and delicacy to that of his buildings.

Troughout his career, Leonard Manasseh has demonstrated his commitment to modernist principles applied with a delicacy and lightness of touch. Tis is illustrated in Fly Past, one of his entries to this year’s show, composed of watercolour and coloured ink.

Te new library on Victoria Street is part of a scheme by Lynch architects. Te relationship between the infrastructural technology that typifies this central- London street is complimented by architecture and ornamented by sculptures and materials that emphasise the humanistic aspects of city life.
