Christine Murray toasts 30 years of the Architecture Awards
Since Foster Associates was
awarded the inaugural prize in 1983, the
awards for architecture at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition have celebrated excellence in design and the promotion of architecture to the public for three decades. Tis year, Lend Lease and the AJ are delighted to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Architecture Awards with this publication. Te RA Architecture Awards are rare accolades, dedicated not to built work, but to the art and craft of model-making, drawing and photography which accompanies and expresses architectural creation, communicating the idea of a building to the public. What has become a timeless tradition actually began when services engineer Tim Battle of the Towco Group and the AJ joined forces and approached the Royal Academy about the creation of a special prize, to be presented to the best architectural exhibits at the Royal Academy’s summer show. Bovis Construction, now the Lend Lease Group, succeeded the Towco Group as partner in 1986, spearheaded by John Spanswick, then Bovis’s managing director. In recent years, Dan Labbad of Lend Lease, with Te Architects’ Journal, has continued to support (see page 6) the awards. Te judging panel, which changes every year, awards £10,000 to the piece it feels will most encourage an enthusiastic appreciation of architecture among exhibition visitors, with a second award of £5,000 to the best first-time exhibitor. Te awards’ original intent, to promote the value and importance of architecture to the public, has never been more critical. Tousands of visitors to the RA Summer Exhibition find themselves drawn to these models and sketches, many of which transport the visitor to an ideal imagined place. It is an honour to preside over the 30th edition of these awards with Lend Lease, long may they thrive.
