of the ‘horse trading’ that goes on between curators in the two-week period of the hang. Lunches and coffee breaks are not merely for refreshment but for striking deals on whether one work could be traded between galleries. As well as some of the sculpture ending up in the architecture rooms, work by Will Alsop – the requisite ‘outrageous piece’ Wilkinson says you need in every show – made its way into the painting gallery. Tis trading helped Wilkinson and Jiricna in their aspiration for, in Wilkinson’s words, ‘a more seamless link between the run of galleries, which I think we’ve managed to achieve’. Any aspiring exhibitor to the architecture room

can take heart that they will get their work in front of the hanging curators – architecture is the only gallery out of the other RA disciplines (painting, engraving and sculpture) where works are not pre-vetted. Like the timber golden sections in the RA’s courtyard, the beauty in the Summer Show for Wilkinson is in its simplicity. ‘What it does is give a glimpse of what is happening in architecture today; projects, photos and models of projects coming up and in the pipeline from big-name architects, from up-and-coming ones, and from students. It’s nothing more than that. It’s not a specific show – and that is its attraction.’ James Pallister
