Concept Sketch – Sheffield

Ink Paul Koralek RA

987 Tree Ink Paul Koralek RA

A Royal Academician since 1991, Paul Koralek studied architecture at the Architectural Association in 1951. Known for his modernist ethos and enjoyment of complicated settings, he submitted six sketch drawings into this year’s Royal Academy summer exhibition. Te abstract ink drawing that is shown here studies a tree, in which the details of foliage and light are subtly depicted.

Paul Koralek’s series of concept sketches relate projects to their context and study possible geometries for the existing urban setting. Te ink drawing entitled Concept Sketch – Sheffield is an elevational sketch of Cambridge Street in Sheffield; it shows a series of pitched roofs at varying scales.

989 Sketch – Sheffield Ink Paul Koralek RA

Te sketch above, which is simply entitled Sheffield, is a perspective ink drawing of Cambridge Street in this northern English city. Koralek’s study of the area shows the view down a busy street. Te street appears lively, with members of the public engaged in activity –be that window shopping or simply walking and meeting people.

990 Barn Ink Paul Koralek RA

Koralek believes that it is sketches that lie at the basis of everything, right through to impressions of vernacular buildings in their context with a focus on architectural detail. Te Barn ink drawing of a small cottage, which appears to be in the countryside, conveys the materiality of the dwelling and the surrounding soft landscape in which it sits.

991 Bell Ink Paul Koralek RA

Paul Koralek’s selection of ink drawings have been developed from studies of growth and form from nature. Te Bell ink drawing shown here captures the top of a church spire in a rural setting. Te rolling hills in the distance appear endless. Koralek expresses the materiality of the buildings in the foreground with clarity.
