1105 & 1106 Cityscape & Black Trio (A, B, C) Laser prints Gordon Benson RA

Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s School of Art is, arguably, the hinge between the Scottish Enlightenment and Modernism. Te building is simultaneously a part of, and apart from, the city and its citizens. Constantly awakening an awareness of the barely visible, it renews the everyday, elevating that which is pragmatic to the poetic. Tis is the alchemic core of Modernism – ‘the de-familiarisation of the habitual’, according to Shklovsky and ‘invisible in the everyday visible’ in the words of Beckett. Te exhibits examine the obscured in the everyday.
