St Fillan’s Primary

The end of 2011 proved to be very busy for all in St Fillan’s Primary. Primary 1 have been running a class Post Office as part of their Enterprise work. Primary 2/3 and Primary 3 have also enjoyed taking part in a variety of live webcasts during the latter part of the year, including one with author Matthew Fitt and author/illustrator Quentin Blake. The webcasts enhanced class work by allowing the children to access experts in their respective fields, as well as allowing our younger pupils to see the benefits of technology being used to support their learning.

Our Parent Council have continued to work

tirelessly to help us replenish our old computer stock with new pcs. We have just ordered another 8 netbooks which means our pupils have increased access to new technology, the current ratio being 1 pc to every 4 pupils. Primary 4/5 and Primary 5 pupils have been taking advantage of the latest set of computer kit to arrive and are putting it to good use.

Primary 6 organised yet another successful Fairtrade Community Café. As well as our regular Community Christmas Hampers we were able to collect many Fairtrade items which Primary 6 made into a special Fairtrade Christmas hamper, extending our work as a Fairtrade school.

The children came together to hold three performances of our Christmas show which was written and produced by Mrs Gavin. In the final week of term we held our end of term mass and presented gifts we had collected for other children to a representative from St Margaret’s Children and Family Care Society. We also raised money for SCIAF and this was sent off to help others in need. Our singing group entertained residents in Johnstone

Duchal Nursery School Give your child the best start in life

The children had a busy end to the year learning all about America and celebrating thanksgiving.

One of the Duchal parents delighted us with a wonderful talk and photos about their family’s experience of Diwali in India. The girls were able to try on beautiful Indian clothes. This all brought the festival alive for the children. The farmer’s market in Kilmacolm on Saturday 3rd December was enjoyed by all, despite the atrocious weather! Thank you to those who made donations and purchases from the Duchal stall. The children enjoyed a wonderful run up to Christmas creating lots of artwork and decorations. We had a fantastic trip to the Tron theatre to see the production, ‘The Night After Christmas’. The highlight for many of the children was travelling to and from Glasgow by coach, whilst singing along to Christmas music! Our Christmas party was held on the last day of term with lots of fun and games. The children received a visit from Santa and we all had fun watching the children’s Nativity!

On behalf of everyone at Duchal, we would like to wish you all a very Happy New Year!

Langbank Primary School

We really celebrated Scotland in a big way for St Andrew’s Day by inviting Stuart Campbell, a local gourmet chef to do a cookery demonstration to pupils and parents. He treated us to vegetable and seaweed soup, mussels cooked in ale and raspberry, pear and apple smoothies. All dishes were made from locally sourced Scottish produce.

Sheltered Housing, as well as singing in the Paisley Centre to help raise funds for the Ronald McDonald charity. As a final treat when the entire school travelled to Glasgow to attend the SECC 3D panto (due to it being such a hit last year). All were “in stitches” with John Barrowman and the Krankies and their extremely entertaining version of “Robinson Crusoe and the Carribean Pirates”.

Registration for our new Primary 1 pupils takes place on 11th and 12th January 2012, 1-3pm. We look forward to meeting with new parents and pupils then.

We offer heartfelt thanks to all who have helped and supported our school this year in their many different ways; our parents, parental/family volunteers, members of our St Fillan’s parish and the Houston community and staff and pupils from our local high schools. We look forward to an equally busy year ahead in 2012.

We then had Kenny Wilson of the Wherries in to entertain pupils and parents - a great time was had by all - singing along to ‘She’ll be coming round the mountain’, ‘Sailin’ doon the Clyde on the Waverly’, ‘Flower of Scotland’... and many more. To round off the week we had a whole school Cèilidh, where we even had Primary 1’s doing the Gay Gordons and the Military Two Step.

It is so important that schools work with children to keep up traditions and promote Scotland’s culture.
