On 24th November, we enjoyed a very interesting presentation by Ricky Martin, of Bridge of Weir, who took part in an adventurous trip to Iceland in a 72 foot sailing vessel belonging to Ocean Youth Trust Scotland.
Parcel Delivery Scam
The Trading Standards Office are making people aware of the following scam: A card is posted through your door from a company called PDS (Parcel Delivery Service) suggesting that they were unable to deliver a parcel and that you need to contact them on 0906 6611911 (a Premium rate number).
DO NOT call this number, as this is a mail scam originating from Belize. If you call the number and you start to hear a recorded message you will already have been billed £315 for the phone call. If you do receive a card with these details, then please contact Royal Mail Fraud on 020 7239 6655. For more information, see the Crime Stoppers website:

Ocean Youth Trust Scotland is a world leading youth work charity, delivering an annual programme of voyages aboard its fleet of sail training vessels. They sail with young people, aged from 12 to 25 years of age and with a wide range of backgrounds, on voyages throughout Scotland and beyond. In most cases these young people will have no previous sailing experience and the Trust aims to inspire them through the challenge of adventure under sail so providing a powerful and effective environment for the personal development of participants.
Ricky, who is a Volunteer Sea Staff member of the OYTS, took part in the Iceland Challenge as a crew member on the “Alba Endeavour” which sailed from Inverness to the Icelandic port of Djupivogur via the Pentland Firth, the Orkneys and Faroe Islands. Whilst in Iceland the crew had time for sightseeing including a trip to a glacier.
This was an extremely good presentation illustrated with some wonderful photos and video-clips, including some interviews with crew members.

Monthly meetings September - April on the 3rd Tuesday of the month at 7.30pm.
I’d like to start by wishing everyone in Renfrewshire all the best for 2012. I hope you all enjoyed the festive period.
In the Community: I would like to thank Renfrewshire Women’s Association for inviting me to their Annual Conference in Paisley Town Hall. The Conference raised a number of serious issues, including the trafficking of women and children in Scotland. RWA carries out excellent work all across Renfrewshire, raising awareness about gender-based violence including domestic abuse, rape, sexual assault and childhood sexual abuse. I’m sure we all share the Association’s wish for Renfrewshire to be a safe place for women and children to live, work and play and a place where no form of violence against woman and children is tolerated.
I stood alongside students outside Reid Kerr College in Paisley, in protest at the Scottish Government’s decision to slash college budgets by a further 20%. Recent figures show that around 100,000 young people are unemployed in Scotland, so the Government must do all it can to support young people into employment. An important part of that is providing the education and training to give them the best chance to get a job. The SNP Government should reconsider the consequences these cuts will have on young people in Renfrewshire.
Council Elections: It has been a privilege to represent the people of Johnstone North, Kilbarchan and Lochwinnoch for the last four years, but after being promoted to the Scottish Parliament last year, I have decided to step down as a Councillor at the next Election. I was keen to stay on until May to make sure the area continued to receive the best possible representation at local authority level. I’m now delighted that Derek Bibby and Chris Gilmour have been selected as the Labour candidates for the ward, both of whom I know very well!
My father Derek, who shaped my own politics, and Chris Gilmour have the energy, experience and local knowledge needed to make excellent Councillors and I wish them both the best of luck.
Surgeries: My next advice surgeries will be on Saturday 7th January and Saturday 4th February at 9am in the McKillop Hall, Lochwinnoch and at 10am in the Steeple Hall, Kilbarchan.
Please contact me at any other time by calling 0141 889 0457, email Neil.
