Houston Community Council Pothole Register

The Community Council introduced a Pothole Register in the summer, which is sited at the Carrick Centre in the village.

As we are now in the season of snowy conditions and heavy rain, Houston residents are reminded that local roads may have unseen hazards in the form of potholes, which at this time of year can be disguised as puddles or filled with snow. If YOU see a pothole on the road, why not pop into the Centre, register its whereabouts in the register provided, and help local elected members keep on top of the problem by letting them know about it? The quicker they are aware of the problem, the faster the pothole can be reported by them to Roads for repair. You know it makes sense!

Houston Sunbeams

Houston Sunbeams is a very successful, non profit making, voluntary Youth organisation for Primary School girls from Houston and surrounding areas. We believe the group has been running in Houston village for more that thirty years.

Twenty six years ago Alison (Muir) answered an advert in the local newspaper looking for volunteers to join the group, which at the time was run by Irene Strachan. Four years later Lorna (Cairns) moved into the village having previously lived in Yorkshire. Wanting to involve her daughters in village life, Lorna brought her youngest to Sunbeams.

Luckily for Sunbeams Elaine was unsettled and a fellow helper Cath Donaldson suggested Lorna stayed to help. When Irene Strachan moved on, Alison and Lorna agreed to run the group together. Over the last twenty years together, they have enjoyed organising all the fun games, craft activities, food and the many themed parties. Without regular help none of this would have been possible and they couldn’t have done without the regular help from their

youngest

daughters Elaine and Fiona, who were themselves Sunbeams, the many Sunbeam mums, their own friends, Guides and girls working towards their Duke of Edinburgh Award.

Through Sunbeams, Alison and Lorna have become best friends and have enjoyed lots of fun and friendship, while providing the varied programme for the girls over the years.

But all good things come to an end and they have both decided it is time to move over and look for someone with new ideas and energy to take over. With that in mind, when Sunbeams finish in May 2012, Alison and Lorna hope to be able to hand over all the craft supplies and decorations and move on.

Sunbeams will continue with Alison and Lorna until summer 2012 when they hope to find someone take over to enable this popular group to continue in the village for many years to come.

If anyone would like more information Alison can be contacted on 01505690380 and Lorna on 612844.
