Keep it Local !

On Saturday 3rd December, Kilmacolm was visited by the Farmers’ Market for the first time. The weather was fairly awful, at the end of a week where we’d seen the worst floods for many years; nonetheless the Village was very busy that day, which may be in part due to the Market.

A Farmers’ Market has been mooted as a village event since the inception of the KNCC project, but the present financial climate may throw the present timing into doubt. It was hoped that events like this would bring people to the Village, which in turn should increase the trade for the local retailers, however there are clearly mixed feelings.

Attracting people to shop locally has to be the main objective. A couple of

years ago Kilmacolm Community Council ran a “Keep it Local” campaign, urging people to support the local traders. A Farmer’s Market clearly has its pros and cons, but with the prospect of a new Retail Park in Port Glasgow the situation of supporting local traders is more urgent than ever. B&Q has announced that it is to open a super-store beside Tesco and, attracted by the presence of these two super-stores, other large retailers will follow suit. Call me cynical, but this will surely kill-off what’s left of Port Glasgow Town Centre and, more worrying for Kilmacolmics, the close proximity of a large retail park is likely to have a negative impact on our village shops too.

Any event which brings people to the Village, or keeps people in the Village, surely has to be a good thing. After just one such event it’s maybe too early to make a sensible judgement, but, that said, does anyone have an opinion on the matter?

Alternatively, does anyone have other ideas of what we could use this open-space for? One early idea was to knock down what is now the new library and convert the whole area to parking; surely we can come up with something more innovative than a village centre dominated by car-parking?

Please get in touch with your views, either by contacting the New Community Centre (info@ kncc.org.uk), your Local Community Council (info@kilmacolmcc.co.uk) or alternatively The Advertizer (info@advertizer.co.uk) and we’ll pass it on.

Whatever your views, remember to think twice before shopping and do your best to “Keep it Local!”

(Plan view of proposed development shown) From a previous Press Release:

B&Q is taking the largest unit at the Port Glasgow site on former shipyard land beside the town’s Tesco. The development will have 13 non-food retail units, a hotel and a pub/restaurant and around 600 parking spaces. Construction is expected to start next year.
