Hundreds of pets are becoming seriously ill and in some cases dying because of the rock salt and antifreeze being used during the cold snap, animal charities warned.
Dogs and cats are walking through the substances left by gritters trying to clear roads and car drivers defrosting their windscreens and then licking them off their paws.
Consuming rock salt can cause dehydration, liver failure and pancreatitis, while antifreeze contains the chemical ethylene glycol, which can be lethal when ingested.

She would be a fabulous companion cat for someone home all day who enjoys gardening as she will sit and supervise your work from dusk till dawn. Mandy would be better for someone with experience of cats who would not find her 6kg size intimidating and is prepared to give her low calorie food - which isn’t much more expensive than ordinary food. She is a friendly girl who will require a home where she will get lots of exercise. Rhia will need an experienced owner who has no other animals so she can be the only pet in the household.
